Habitat: A Field Guide to Decorating fuses designer and blogger Lauren Liess’s love of interiors and the great outdoors. Liess, the designer behind the popular blog; Pure Style Home (www.laurenliess.com/pure-style-home), is a rising star in the interiors world. She’s known for mixing hard and soft, the natural elements with quirky, vintage pieces. She often uses botanicals as art pieces; she accessorises with stones, wood and other natural objects; she draws inspiration from thistles and wildflowers for her textile choices. Everything Liess assembles has a hint of her green thumb.Part I takes the reader chronologically through the process of designing a house, with each chapter focusing on a specific design element. Part II is a room-by-room study that tackles unique room-specific challenges, from entryways to living rooms. The book is an extension of the welcoming tone and gorgeous photography featured on Pure Style Home, which has evolved into a full-fledged brand and interiors business―Liess stays busy decorating her readers’ homes and recently opened a textile shop in suburban DC. Good idea but...
The book itself is weighty and divided into 3 parts; elements of design, intangible elements of design and room by room guide, these are then listed with various sub headings. I like this idea but I expected the book to excite me, take my hand and show me a varying wealth of ideas, colours, rich with fabrics, maximalist, minimalist, monochrome etc etc and as much mind spinning, oh ‘that’s a great idea’ type of thing! But.... I’ve just found it a bit.... boring. The photographs seem a bit flat, samey (not sure if that’s a word!) almost as if the book was about one house, one family. Perhaps Lauren Liess wanted that, to encourage you to use the book as a reference to launch yourself off into the wonderful world of interior design and not influence you, but to let you find yourself? Hmmmm.. I’m sure ‘Habitat’ could act as a great guide but sorry it ain’t for me.

Inspiring and Useful
Beautiful book and surprisingly practical. The photography is, of course, beautiful. As are the houses pictured. But there's plenty of practical advice in there as well. Really a lovely book.

Lovely book
This is a lovely book and has great content the reason I deducted a star is it’s a little more of a yellow beige than it looks in the photo

Great Reference
Absolutely love this book! It is full of very helpful information such as spacing furniture, height of lighting, timeless materials of fabric, faucets, handles + drawer pulls worth investing in, etc. Great reference for all the renovations we are working on in our home as well as our decor style. Back of book references where to shop for items throughout book. Pictures are gorgeous throughout with muted colors that are earthy and timeless designs. If this is your desired style you will love this book.

Great resource and coffee table book
I found Lauren Liess’ decorating style resonates with my love for natural materials and earthy colours and found the book inspiring. The book is well structured as a guide that appeals not only to those who are decorating/re-decorating their homes but also to those who are building/buying or renovating their homes as it includes useful information and insights also on the architectural elements of the space, for whom it can provide a good foundation. I like the fact that the author addresses both the tangible and the intangible elements of design and found it a good source of inspiration for a decorating refresh for my home and I am sure it will be a useful resource to refer to for advice on how to approach any future renovation/refurbishing project I may undertake. The paper/binding/cover are all of high quality, making it also a good coffee table book. Amazon delivered both this and another high quality book I ordered very quickly and both arrived in pristine conditions.
