How does this product compare to H2o's cleaning clay?

is this product ok to use on clothes/shoes?

I use this product mostly on my stovetop and I love it. Never tried it on clothing items, but it would probably be effective on tennis shoe trim.

does this clean silver plate?

Not sure about silver plate. It does clean real silver.

Is this supposed to be the consistency of a soft paste, or a firm block that you have to wipe several times to fill sponge?

It comes as a firm block within its plastic housing. You must dippidee soft sponge in a bit of water and rub it into the firm block. That way it will turn to a soft paste which can be rubbed on the surface to be cleaned. It represents extremely well Pond cleaning pots and pans. I have used it for many years and find it to be the best product on the market.
