Begin to Identify Mushrooms with this Great Visual Guide for the Northeastern United States! Mushrooming is a popular and rewarding pastimeโand itโs one that you can enjoy with the right information at hand. Mushrooms of the Northeast is the field guide to get you started. The region-specific book utilizes an innovative, user-friendly format that can help you identify mushrooms by their visual characteristics. Hundreds of full-color photographs are paired with easy-to-understand text, providing the details to give you confidence in the field. The information, written by foraging experts Teresa Marrone and Walt Sturgeon, is accessible to beginners but useful for even experienced mushroom seekers. Learn about more than 400 species of common wild mushrooms found in the Northeast states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont. The species (from Morel Mushrooms to Shelf Mushrooms) are organized by shape, then by color, so you can identify them by their visual characteristics. Plus, with the Top Edibles and Top Toxics sections, you'll begin to learn which are the edible wild mushrooms and which to avoid. Get this field guide, jam-packed with information, and start identifying the mushrooms you find. Review: Definitely worth the money! - Good book, very informative, good size. Not too small not too big not too heavy not too light. Itโs just right. Review: Best pocket-sized guide - This is a surprisingly good guide for such a small book (genuinely pocket sized). Photos are high quality & show key characteristics. Similar species are discussed, often with smaller photos. Taxonomy is updated. The Top Edible and Top Toxics sections are clever & useful. I wouldn't depend solely on this for identification (I don't depend on any single guide for mushroom identification), but this is the best small book for Northeastern mushrooms and is the one I now always take with me in the field. There are several more detailed guides that include more species (and you should have them), but they are much larger and heavier (I've learned to carry as little as I can in the field), and, although very helpful for identifying collected mushrooms at home, are often too cumbersome in the field. Marrone & Sturgeon achieved a fine balance between conciseness, detail, and coverage in a tidy little user-friendly package. One addition I'd make would be to include a strong warning about small Lepiota mushrooms in the Top Toxics section - some are deadly poisonous, but this is rarely mentioned in any mushroom guides.

Very Good Field Guide for Ohio, Pa, NYS, MD, and the rest of the N.E. states!
this is a small field guide, nice quality paper, lots of clear fotos, and they have a section on wild edible mushrooms, and ones which are toxic. That's what I want to know, easily ! it could have used the symbol for edible and toxic more through out the book, sometimes u have to read about the mushroom to figure out if it is or isn't edible, and they could have saved me a lot of time and effort, just tell me!! so the book does need improvements, like most all of the books, I want a listing in the index which are edible and which are toxic or non-edible, since they are ones that no one wants, at least not me!! and the common name for them should be listed too, so I can find it easily, all books have this problem. so if u don't know what it is, DON"T EAT IT !! or ur not sure, DON"T EAT IT!! I would like to see if they have a book like this for other areas, I think it is a very good book. No e-mail is included to talk to the authors either, it should have that. the publishers name and number is printed, but no e-mail for them either! good luck !

Tiny book with lots of information for a beginner but disappointing picture quality in my print
Initial impression is the book is a lot smaller in person than I expected, which is great because its going to be a field guide during hikes. I came away disappointed with the overall picture quality in my print. All pictures seem a bit darker and slightly blurrier than they should be which is a shame because this book deserves top quality images making the process of learning and identification easier and more enjoyable. I realize its going to be more of a struggle with this print than I hoped. Really like the format for each mushroom of habitat, description, spore print, season, edible/toxic notes, and lookalikes.

Excellent pictures, helpful information on mushrooms for the hobby mycologist!
This is a handy book, convenient for taking with you in a backpack if you wanted. It's laid out very well for looking up mushrooms, good information. It is not meant to be a completely comprehensive book - that would be too large and heavy. It suits me very well as an amateur mushroom hunter!

a must have for anyone foraging in New England area! book fits into pocket and is great!
This book has tons of info! great references and so many pics of different types of mushrooms in different stages even... really a gem! I recommend it to any friends that want to start foraging in local woods. I learned so much from it. just try not to lose it. lol. I now own 3 copies (ops) because one got slightly wet on a foray and 1 was lost in the house and I can't be without it! I may have to tie one to my mushroom basket! hmmmm. maybe they should put a little ring into the corner of a book so I can attach it to the basket. or if the book would be bound on rings. lol. it's a really really good book. worth every penny!!! and more

A must have
A great book for a great price and a must have. The book arrived quickly and in minimal packaging. This book is a must have for northeastern mushroom hunting. Excellent diagrams and great pictures to help you identify all the mushrooms you run into. If you go out foraging than this book should be in your pocket or car, it will help you learn about the mushrooms you want to eat and the one you should stay away from.

Excellent pocket guide.
My husband is a fervent mushroomer, and he is thrilled with this book--the pocket size makes it the perfect companion to carry into the woods. The information is presented in a easy to access way, from Choice mushrooms to poison. It has nice, durable pages and lots of excellent colour photos. If you like mushrooms and want to know more about them, buy this little book which is big on information!

Handy pocket size, great images...
A very nice little pocket guide for beginners. I wish it had a little more information....Great place to start but you will need a more comprehensive guide in the future...Beautifully illustrated...Nice color coded key that separates types as well as edible verses inedible or poisonous...
