You need a screwdriver for eyeglasses. You can get them at Walgreens, CVS, Walmart. Very easy to open

can this heart just sit by itself on a desk?

Absolutely. I stitched them into a couple Magic Dragon stuffed animals. Bit they would work equally as well just sitting out.

can you use this to record baby crying?

I didn't purchase this to record my great granddaughter crying. I ordered it to record her mother's heartMother's and then place them in her favorite stuffed bears.
