Thomas Balinger The Ukulele Songbook Shanties & Songs of the Sea Far-away oceans, perilous storms, bold explorers, bloodthirsty pirates and treasures hidden on mysterious islands – but likewise the hopes and the fears of friends, lovers and families left back home on dry land – have made for fascinating and evocative stories since the day men caught a glimpse of the deep blue sea. But there’s more to the ocean’s fascination than just stories and myths. It also spawned its very own kind of music: the Shanties – songs of the wind and the waves, of hard work on the seven seas, of romantic buccaneers and brutal skippers harrying their crews to the marrow. In this book you’ll find a collection of shanties known and loved all over the world, arranged for easy Ukulele in standard C tuning (G-C-E-A). Of course, there’s „classics“ like Banks of Sacramento , Blow the man down or What shall we do with the drunken sailor , but you’ll also encounter some songs not as common and maybe some you might never have heard before. All songs in musical notation with chord symbols plus melody TAB – you don’t have to read music to start playing right away! Whether you want to pick the melody, strum the chords or just need the complete lyrics: you’ll find everything you need on these pages. And if you don’t know how to play a particular chord, don’t worry: each song features easy-to-read chord diagrams , too. For reference, there’s a handy appendix listing all the chords used in this book plus a selection of easy strumming patterns you can use to accompany songs. Songs 1. A drop of Nelson's blood 2. Lot's of songs, ranging from well known to not-so-well known. Easy Uke chords for beginners and a chord chart at the back, as well as strumming and picking patterns. Perhaps the only quibble would be some of the mis-spelling of lyrics but that's a small thing over all.

A great song book with a few old classics and some new ones too
So , I read music and I also play by tab and chord, all are covered in this book and very well presented, a bpm is the only missing thing but it’s not a deal breaker. A good selection of old songs and some new ones to try, in the back are some useful notes on different rhythms for strumming and finger picking as well as chord charts. Great book for the price and I will look to get the blue grass book next

Bargain fun
It is difficult to find 'songbooks' which are any good. This book is good. It has good TAB to learn the melody, plus chords and lyrics. The lyrics 'seem' to be more American as the British versions of shanties that I know and have heard have some differences in lyrics. This isn't a problem though as shanties don't really have standard lyrics anyhow. There are chord diagrams, strumming patterns for each time signature (16 in total) and 29 suggested finger picking patterns listed in the back. 50 shanties for basically a fiver. All the favourites are there plus many others. there is no need for a CD or online links to hear the melodies, because they are easy to learn with the tab nds no one plays a shanty with the strict observance of classical music anyhow. Great buy and great fun

lovely book
Again, as I said with all the books in this series/publisher they are so well written for players to use of all levels. I often have to do my own tabs, but these books in this series has them already and they appear so far to be accurate. Chord diagrams are there to assist and the notes are written too, if you want to read music the standard way. This book is packed with lots of songs, so there has to be something for everyone here. Drawback is that you will need a clip to hold it open, or have it spiral bound or hole punched to get it the stay flat for reading and playing.

Great music for ukes!
I had this book recommended to me by someone in my ukulele class. It has been a good book to use because the print is a nice size and the chord markings are clear. Give this book a try. We have loved playing these songs together!
