Does the job, but don't replace every 6 months!
These are great quality and fit for purpose. However, Fluval tell you to replace one every 6 months along with half of the biomax. Don't do it! I learned this the hard way and it crashed my cycle, hence the dropping of one star. They only need replacing when they're starting to break up. Heed these words!

Cheaper versions have been found to be false economy. These last up to 6 months, so a years worth in one box. Also they do not break up.

It does what's supposed to do. Placed it with ceramic and wool and the water is fantastic in both my community tank and my betta tank. It could potentially last 6 months in a "bio-filter", so I'm pleased.
