Paul Verhoeven's attempt to couple the softcore sex film with the Hollywood musical stars Elizabeth Berkley as a Las Vegas stripper who lap-dances her way to the city's most prestigious chorus line. Vying with the show's established star for the leading role in a new erotic spectacular, Berkley gives the director (Kyle MacLachlan) a close-up demonstration of what she can do. Dave Stewart of Eurythmics provides the music for the steamy dance routines. Review: Must watch film fil - A film that's bad it's good! The grim truth behind the glow
This video gives a pretty fair taste of the sleaze behind the glitter of showgirls. These are the pretty talented dancers who can become quite ruthless in their quest for fame. They don't care who they hurt. They become skilled at using people. Sadly, anyone who has been part of the entertainment business will relate to the truth of this piece of fiction which could easily have been based on a true story. The performances are superb without exception and the dance routines electrifying. It's great entertainment. Highly recommended!

A glamorous story with a strong message.
The video disc was easy to play and set up. The content was okay and the performances were quite good if a little strained at first. The story was a little over-the-top but it grew on me. I didn't like the moral of the story: namely that anything goes in the fight to get ahead. This didn't seem to matter too much because the main character was almost living on the breadline. However the point was made that we all need friends if we want to survive and at the end of the story justice was served, even if it was a bit rough! The bad guys in the movie did deserve some far from gentle treatment, in my opinion. Some of the secondary characters were a bit sleazy but let's not forget that Las Vegas, where the action took place, is a city known by some as the 'City Of Sin'! The dancing in this film was executed very well but the choreography could have been more tasteful. A good point was implied in the movie that just because someone works in the adult entertainment industry it doesn't automatically make them bad or nasty people.

Absolutely hilarious.
Very few comedies have the guts to just play it straight, and let the audience realise where the jokes are. But when you do it right, the payoff is immense. Showgirls is one of those comedies. To this day marketed as a serious drama, for those of us that know the truth, Showgirls finds Elizabeth Berkley of Saved By The Bell establishing herself as a gifted comedienne. The show is nearly stolen from her Nomi character, though, by virtually every member of the colourful supporting cast. The storyline is irrelevant to the hilarity that ensues, but is basically a classic tale of getting everything you want and then not liking it when you get it. Over the film's admittedly overlong two hours, the cast unleash a huge array of hilarious one-liners, nonsensical dialogue and absolutely baffling over-reactions to the plot developments; all, as previously mentioned, treated completely seriously to only make it funnier. Most of these lines feature substantial profanity so it's hard to give an indication of just how funny the film is here, but the running gags are fantastic, involving many topics that were previously off-limits for a mainstream comedy like menstruation and ejaculation. The show stealer here is Robert Davi as Al, the owner of the strip club where Nomi works before her success. Literally every single line he has in the film is side-splitting, although Glen Plummer is almost as funny as the scumbag choreographer James Smith. I recommend to anyone with anything approaching a sense of humour to see Showgirls - the black comedy to end all black comedies.

Ok film
The film itself is not particularly great but Elizabeth Berkley steals the show & is absolutely fantastic. She puts her all into the role & is so beautiful & believable. Worth buying just for her acting performance. Don't expect a great story line or a great film, if you do you'll be disappointed.

What's not to like?
I like it. It could be seen as barely disguised pornography, but unlike porn this actually has a good plot and is fairly uncheesy. Elizabeth Berkley is very good in this. I remember the days when I used to watch her in the teen TV series "Saved By The Bell" Hasn't she come a long way? Showgirls is a powerful, unpredictable movie and a turn on. Elizabeth's character kinda comes full circle by the end of the movie. It's satisfying. The people who give this a thumbs down are probably just offended by the huge amount of topless girls in it. I'd definitely recommend this movie. Like I said, what's not to like about it?

SHOWGIRLS (Blu-Ray)
I have this on ex-rental vhs from blockbuster purchased back in the late 1990s and decided to upgrade to a blu-ray disc. This is actually not a bad movie it got a lot of bad reviews at the time of it's cinema release mostly about the graphic violence and femail nudity but it does have a decent story to it. It may not be one of director Paul Verhoeven's best movies but I've seen a lot worse. I think it's an OK movie. Recommended 😀

Este fil de Paul Verhoeven ya se ha convertido en un clásico y en una cinta de culto, sin duda. Buena edición, aunque el sonido es muy mejorable; eso sí, buenísima calidad de vídeo, además que cuenta con variados extras.

One of the best bad movies every plus has the best line in any movie. The line is during the scene when Nomi's boss & friends are leaving the stage, her boss walks back to her and says it, can't put it here in that's it NSFW. But it great.
