Can the torch fire in an upward direction into a open firebox on a gravity fed smoker?

I would think it would work fine. Once lit it's like a torch and should work in any direction. It works great to light wood/charcoal. I love it!

What is the btu rating?

Actually, propane provides about 2.4 times more BTUs than natural gas for a given volume. NG provides 1030 BTUs per cubic foot and propane provides 2516 BTUs per cubic foot.

Do this light the charcoal directly, or do I still need starter blocks, etc.?

You do not need starter blocks or chips with this torch. I have a Big Green Egg and use only lump charcoal, depending on the cook I hold it near the charcoal in one to three spots for about 30-45 seconds each. One or two spots for a low and slow cook, two or three spots for a high temp grill for steaks or burgers.

Would this work with a charcoal chimney?
