Good quality!
Comfortable handle. Good quality. Good for light use.

Cuts well.
Convenient. Sturdy. Storage. Relatively easy to use. Blade does not lock and will retract when cutting heavy material. You have to use the set screw to keep the blade in place. But, then you need to back off the set screw to retract the blade. Cuts well and I like having extra blades in the handle.

My "GO-TO" knife for Halloween prop building.
The knife's extend & retract work very smoothly. The lock is very useful to secure the blade when extended far. The blade auto-load feature is the best! It holds 5 blades and instantly loads a new one when needed. The handle seems sturdy and grip feels very secure. I used this to make several animatronic Halloween props this year. I kept this in my pocket because I used it so often. Having a long razor-sharp blade at the ready was a huge time saver for me. My only complaint is with the little locking screw. It works, but it takes 2 hands to lock and unlock the blade, and the screw will fall out if you don't keep slight pressure on it at all times.

Excellent utility knife
Wow, I really like this utility knife! At first I thought it was a little heavy but after using it for 25 minutes straight cutting down boxes, I didn't find it heavy at all! And I really like how it performs and the blades are Sharp! I was curious as to how sharp the blade would be on 40 boxes that I had to cut down, but it was just as sharp on the 40th box as it was on the 1st, which really is not what generally happens with my other blades! Looks like the Dowell Utility Knife was an exceptionally good buy for the price!

Fits like a glove!
I've used several different styles of box cutters like this over the last 10 years, working in a hospital warehouse. I had a holster made for an old box cutter of this style for my belt, that's no longer manufactured and I've had difficulty finding another one that I like. The screw safety is nice, it doesn't get in the way, and it fits in my belt holster. The outside is plastic, but the part that holds all the blades is metal, and it uses universal style blades. I'm really happy with this, looking forward to breaking down boxes with it.

Disappointing Mechanism — Not What I Expected ⭐
I was really hoping this DOWELL Utility Knife would be a solid addition to my toolbox, especially since it comes with extra blades and promises a heavy-duty design. Unfortunately, the overall mechanism just doesn’t hold up to expectations. The biggest issue is with the retractable blade system — it feels rough and inconsistent. The self-loading function sounds convenient in theory, but in practice, it tends to jam or misalign, making it frustrating to switch blades quickly. The knob on top, which is supposed to provide stability and handle more pressure, doesn’t feel very secure. When I tried cutting through medium-thickness cardboard, the blade wobbled slightly, reducing precision and confidence in use. The handle itself has decent weight, and the design looks solid, but functionally, it doesn’t deliver. I also noticed that the blade lock doesn’t always engage properly, which can be concerning for safety during tougher cuts. It’s clear the product had good intentions — self-loading blades and a pressure knob are smart features on paper — but the execution needs improvement. For light-duty tasks it might be passable, but for anyone expecting a dependable heavy-duty cutter, this one will likely disappoint. I appreciate the effort in design and packaging, but given the unreliable mechanism, I can’t recommend it. Hopefully, future versions refine the internal mechanics to match the sturdy look of the knife.

Poor build quality
Broke after a couple months of use. My dollar store utility knife has outlasted this one by ages

Very functional but dodgy build quality
Knife is comfortable to hold, cartridge functionality is great, and very nice to have 5 blades handy without going to the box for more blades. Blade lock is nice, keeps the blade from pulling out when pull-cutting with heavy pressure. Good size, but build quality is subpar. The silver body of the knife is a very hollow feeling plastic which doesn't hold up well. It was already scratched all over the back side just from rubbing on the clear plastic shipping package. NT makes the original two versions of this knife, appears Dowell tried to make a cheap knockoff with only miniscule changes. There is the NT Heavy Cutter L-2000RP, which is much more solidly built - solid aluminum body instead of hollow plastic. Price is about $25 USD, but worth every penny. NT also makes the NT Heavy Cutter L-700RP, which is only $2 more than this Dowell. It has a poly body, but feels more expensive than the Dowell by far. At the end of the day, I would take the NT Heavy Cutter L-2000RP over this every time. It is solid aluminum, much more refined feeling. If I didn't want to spend double the price and didn't mind the plastic/poly body, I would buy the L-700RP over this Dowell. The Dowell is too cheap feeling to make it to my tool pouch. Returned the Dowell, since it was already scuffed beyond belief just from the plastic shipping container.

Good value
Don't know why I waited so long to buy a good box cutter!. I am surprised how often I use this instead of reaching for scissors or a knife especially with frequent Amazon deliveries . Easy to use, great quality and price. Recommended.
