Kind of like a Civ game, but instead of "just one more turn" it is "Just one more quest"
Awesome game. I have never played a monster hunter game and was convinced by a coworker to buy it. Did not like it at first, since the learning curve is quite steep, but at the same time, once you get into, it is a lot of fun. There are a lot of things to do, explore, and craft. Loading screens suck though, but according to my coworker, at least I have the option of going to switch items rapidly as opposed to going in and out of loading screens like previous games. Some things could be better, such as the matchmaking and all, but it seems that problems mostly occur on xbox only. The other major problem, seems to be when people drop out of a quest when you are hunting a monster, it seems that the overall HP of the monster doesn't drop even when you are the only player left. So, this makes it very hard to sometimes finish quests if you have a jacked up monster fighting you. There are some other things I could nitpick on, but those are, for the most part minor. I honestly did not expect it to be this fun, especially after you get past the first few quests and explore. It is a game that grows on you the more you play it, kind of like a Civ game where, instead of "just one more turn", it is just one more quest before the night ends.

Not for the simple minded
It's the best game I have played in awhile. I was hooked on Darkest Dungeon and Monster Hunter: World just sucked me in. The ones who gave this game a low score complained about the complexity and lots of reading...really? They missed the point of the game. It's about hunting, crafting and teamwork, and most of all, mastering a weapon. There is a lot of crafting to learn for items and gear which is the drive of the game. I'll admit the multi-player setup could be better, but it is still fun to play. There are problems with matchmaking and they should have made it easier to start a team in a quest. It gets more challenging as you progress, wait until you get to high rank to see what I mean. If you don't like reading, taking time to learn things and just want to jump in and start slashing, then this game isn't for you. For the others who can handle reading and actually have the ability to learn things on their own and progress, then you'll love it.

It's great overall, but...
I've played Monster Hunter games since Tri on the Wii. I dabbled with the first two, but I never got far (not surprising since I was such a young lass). Overall, it took a quite a bit of time, but Monster Hunter World grew on me. Here are my personal pros and cons (warning: slight bias). PROS: 1. Once I really got into it, it became addicting just like the former MH games I've played. 2. It's neat to not have to buy pickaxes or bug nets and automatically have them. You're able to use them an unlimited amount of time without them breaking. They also don't take up space in your item pouch as in previous games. 3. The single player is MUCH more enjoyable to me. Don't get me wrong, I never bought Monster Hunter and expected a killer single player mode with a brilliant story and superb voice acting, etc., but it's actually very interesting this time. 4. Even though I am more experienced with this series, it is much easier to get accustomed to than previous ones. So for newcomers, this is a plus. Seriously, they hold your hand for the first several hours. You also have Scoutflies to guide you. 5. Once you CAN figure out how to work online playing, it's pleasant to play with other players. :D I haven't played much online, but I'm looking forward to meeting fellow hunters this week. 6. No loading screens during hunts when you switch areas in a region which is amazing. 7. Character creation is better (IMO). I loved creating my palico. :) 8. The maps are gorgeous, but there is something that bothers me which I'll mention in the cons. Some other reviewer said it looked bad all of the time and hurt his head, but I'm not having that issue. It's an vast upgrade from the previous games. Middle Ground: 1. I didn't like tracking the monsters at first. Now, it's just whatever, but it was meh to me. It might be neat to others though. I also have to admit, while I wasn't keen on it, I can appreciate Capcom mixing it up and trying something new. We are the Fifth Fleet here to investigate monsters and their behavior in the New World after all. 2. There's not much space in your item box section to hold weapons and armor. I understand that we don't need a TON of space, but I typically main with GS and use SnS. I also have at least a few armor sets I always rotate between when I unlock the final sets (some for best defense, others to avoid or nullify elemental damage from monsters, my favorite set, etc). There might be a way to unlock more space so this isn't all too bad. Even if you cannot, it's not a deal breaker. I'll just really have to pick a handful of weapons and armor to rely on. 3. If you're not into grinding or hunting monsters time and again, please don't bother. Some people complain and it's not worth giving this game a one star over just because you cannot do grinding or HANDLE it (shout out to the scrubs who rage quit after one hunt). You slay monsters, make armor and weapons, then slay them with a devilish grin as you adorn a coat from their family/friends. >:) CONS: 1. I immensely dislike how single player and multiplayer aren't separate. YOU CAN PLAY "OFFLINE" BY YOURSELF. I definitely like my single player separate though. It's just irritating at times to always create an online room and set it to private session each and every time. (warning: bias here). 2. For whatever reason, this Monster Hunter took me several hours to get into and enjoy unlike the others. I know it's basically same old same old, but eh, I'm not sure. I think it's because I over-hyped myself on this game (in other words-disappointed in it in some senses such as the hunting, our handler, it takes ages to get decent sharpness that lasts, etc). There's something else, but I just can't word it out. I'm thinking it's mostly because I did over-hype this game. 3. Iris (FFXV reference) is so darn annoying as our handler. I wish we got the other one in the introduction. Her perkiness can be cute, but most of the time, it is just overkill. I also dislike how I feel like her babysitter. She does have a FEW redeeming moments, however, if you like overtly cheery people, then this won't be a con. 4. Okay, I'm the LAST PERSON to ever complain about graphics and overall, it's not bad in atmosphere or anything, but at times, the fps drop is SOOooOooOOOoo cringy. It's mostly with the flying wyverns you see from a distance. They look horrendously choppy. I'm assuming (and hoping) it's not like this with the Xbox One X. 5. Multiplayer again, I CANNOT STAND being prevented from hunting monsters online with others because I have not seen a certain cut scene. It's Monster Hunter, who cares? Even for a newbie to the series, is it really going to bother you if you fight a monster you haven't seen the cut scene for? It's just a bit aggravating. Again, why I like the previous ones where single player and multiplayer were separate and there weren't any restraints. If I, choose to play online with others AND JOIN A QUEST in which I hunt a monster I haven't fought yet, I'm already agreeing to not caring about it being new to me or missing a cut scene. That's all I can think of for now. Please duly note as I've previously mentioned, I have some bias so don't let that deter you from getting this game. All in all, I am very much enjoying the game and it's great to be a monster hunter again.

A New World, with familiar faces and plenty of Monsters to hunt!
On purchasing this game from Amazon: As promised; the game was delivered on release date, I received an email with the add-on items to my email address associated with my account, and I have been playing happily ever since! On the game play: I have not played a Monster Hunter game since the original Monster Hunter. There have been several other games released to Sony handheld devices, as well on Nintendo consoles. From the time of the open scene, to the quest I am on now, I have felt just like I did over a decade ago when I was playing on my PS2. I have loved all 24 total hours I've invested in the game, and am looking forward to many more with my friends. Pros: -Target audience. This game introduces itself so that is appeals to the hardcore and lifelong fans, as well as being excited and fun for new comers to the series. -New features. The new features are not overwhelming to new players, and add a nice touch that I did not know would be missing from this sort of game. This includes bounties and investigations. -Progression. Gathering materials and tools necessary to proceeding in the game is familiar, and slightly easier than in previous releases. This makes it useful for those who want to progress through the game quicker or are struggling with a specific quest due to lack of equipment. It is also great fun for the collectors out there who wish to build every set of armor and every customized weapon. Cons: -Multiplayer. From my understanding, this feature greatly improves once your friends or group of hunters are no longer doing main story line missions. However, it must be known that if you wish to bring others with you on quests...you have to wait until you finish out the cut scene before you can invite others. This plays a huge damper on those who are waiting to help you with the quest. It also ruins the flow of game play when either part or all of your party has to get through a cut scene, then leave their games to rejoin the party leader. Again, with optional quests or expeditions...this is not as large of an issue. But it will take several hours of game play before you get past this atrocious, and what I feel to be a step backward, game design. -Lack of explanation of new features. This is on both my Pro and Cons list. The features are excellent to play...once you actually learn that they exist. I spent about 18 hours into the game before I figured out about registering bounties, investigations, the botanist, and other features. I found more detail about these features on third-party forums then the game or related forums told me. All and all, I am happy with my purchase...and wish you luck out in the New World!

It's like a onion, layered and it may bring some tears out
So here's my "knee jerk" reaction to 'Monster Hunter World'. It's the first Monster Hunter game that I have put this much time in. (150+hrs in this game at the time of this "quick review") I tried to play 'Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - Nintendo Wii U ' -I got SO SICK of loading screens, and monsters running off and the crappy controls and the horrid textures,.. the most time I put into it was probably 25 hrs max. I literally bought a Wii U just for the game & was horribly disappointed. To give context where I'm coming from with my review: I've played & beaten the following "Action RPGS" Horizon Zero Dawn Devil May Cry1&2(It has rpg elements) Dragons Dogma Lost Planet 2 DemonsSouls DarkSouls 1-3 Bloodborne NierAutoMata Nioh (The best) TheSurge So, you've bought Monster Hunter World because you were excited by the trailers and the concept! Finally Capcom is bringing the game to modern consoles. (It just took a decade) What could be wrong? Nothing. NOTHING THE HARDCORE Monster Hunter fans SAY. TIS-PERFECT! Perfection incarnate! So what IS really wrong? Well first, you play as a character that is going to faint, flinch & panic at every little monster they happen upon, AND whatever said monster does. Do you think you have more grit than the character your playing? probably? yeah its that bad. Also the main character you play as, has the hand eye coordination of a box of rocks. It's that bad. And if you thought that your character in any of the Dark Souls games, or Bloodborne gentle sipped on their sunny D, while their life was in danger, oh you ain't seen slow till you play this game.. Yeah, something to really look forward to. On top of the "slow at every action that involves you staying alive" your character is going to have to do stupid little "not needed gestures" after consuming whatever it was they finally consumed. you know, once hades froze over. Also if you like crazy hitboxes... just when you thought no one could top Dark Souls in horrid hit boxes.. Monster Hunter World was like "Hold my bourbon while I show you how its done" Well the combat mechanics, SUCK. FLAT OUT. Compared to Dragons Dogma which came out ages ago now. I don't honestly know what the team behind MHW was thinking when they Okay'd what is the final product. (you can't have a control scheme that gets any better if it starts out at annoying) How does combat suck you ask? Well, lets put it this way, if my character spent more time attacking what I was aiming at with my melee weapon, instead of just doing what they felt like and hitting the air or ground, I'd kill monsters faster. I'd harvest parts faster. I'd stay alive longer. If my characters moved faster. I'd hit the targets. (Their is no "Speed up movements" potion that I know of, which you'd have to use all the time) There is one that makes your stamina last longer. The lock on mechanic is horrid. If your going into this thinking "Dragons Dogma" or "Dark Souls" or "Nioh".. NO.. NOPE. N O P E! Your character cannot, CANNOT RUN or move fast with their weapon. Whether its transformed or not. And their is no way, to level your strength up, to be able to do so. You can take "potions" to boost your attacks, you can get gems to boost your attacks, etc.. but that's about it. Your speed of movement is hindered. NOW in the game, how did the developers fix this? Well they didn't. You can only carry two measely traps at a time. The Movement around the environments, is smooth, for the most part, but the platforming elements combined with chasing monsters suck. You'll be trying to bridge some gap, and the game will fail to register what your doing, and you'll fall on your butt. This doesn't help anything when your chasing a monster around the map for the 4th time. Because that's what will happen when facing boss monsters. You will start to win, they will go "Uh oh" and run off like punks. And since Capcoms customer base has grown up, I also don't understand the aesthetics they went with the game. Its not vicarious or awesome, its just kinda "meh" middle ground in how you catch monsters. In Dogma you could really tell you were beating up on the creatures if I remember correctly. (You do notice some asthetical changes in Monster Hunter fights, but nothing that wows you) Its all kiddy level. From the lock on mechanics.. to the actual fighting, to mounting monsters.. to moving around in the environment, you will not think "Hey my character really does come from a race of people who hunt monsters" instead you will find yourself thinking " I think my character is short a couple fruit loops, why does he keep hitting air and the ground, NEXT to the monster" Its honestly pitiful. BUT I've got almost 150 hrs into Monster Hunter World. I like the exploration of the game. I like the crafting system (Although it is outdated in appearance and honestly functionality) and how its based on your environment. The hub is pretty cool! Being able to send your Palico's on quest is cool (Its a story point in the game). The Co-op multiplayer is clunky in some aspects but now that Team Monster Hunter over at Capcom got on it finally.. and fixed the issue, its fun once you actually get going (Well the sos feature works kinda). A lot of little stuff about the game is pretty enjoyable. Its like a bunch of mini games wrapped in mini games. The Item management in the game is annoying but it grows on you. The Item pouch your given, I don't know if you can upgrade it, but for a game.. that REVOLVES around collecting stuff, and crafting stuff, to FIGHT MONSTERS. Its size is laughable and frustrating. While its great team monster hunter was nice enough to have armor crafting stuff go to a separate box that has more room, the stuff you collect is what keeps you alive in fights, and you can't hold very much. The Multiplayer is a bit clunky/doesn't work on the Xbox one. (I feel like this is on purpose) TL:DR Over all I feel like I end up fighting the character, fighting the game really to get where I want to get in the most efficient manner. It doesn't have to be this way, every other action RPG I've played has shown this. BUT this being said, I've bought the game, I've enjoyed it as much as I can, I continue to play it, because quiet frankly no other Action RPG fills the niche that Monster Hunter World does. (And since MS canceled its "ScaleBound" project were all S.O.L) Also you will grow to hate a monster called "Bazelgeuse" .. you ask yourself "Why?' at this point.. trust me, this monster will cause you to curse the programmers and developers behind the game. If your sane when you start playing, you'll at least waggle your fist at the screen or do some similar gesture. Do you know what's more annoying than an invader from darksouls? a troll? A dragon troll that drops explosives on top of your characters head while your trying to fight other monsters.. And it wont help much when your trying to get your character to roll one way, and they want to roll another. (I know theirs settings for this in game, to kind of help mitigate this, but they are useless from my own experience) Would I buy this game again knowing what I know? Yeah I would. Its got enough good if you like the fishing mini game.. to balance it out. I've had some good times when I've been able to get the multiplayer working right. I like the armors in the game and the weapon designs (even if the actual combat is hit and miss) So give it a shot. Give it some love. It does take dedication to enjoy this game. Thanks for your time. Update: So I've got about 200+ hrs in the grind, woops, I meant not fun, oh slip of the tongue, I meant "game"... So how do I feel after all these hours? I feel wore out. And I've been pacing myself. What gets me? what is wearing me out? I feel like even after, AFTER customizing the Radial menu I'm still fighting the game to get my items. Because after ALL the time it takes to get to the item I want, my character gingerly sips, and then politely wipes his mouth and make's a grunt noise or something afterwords, of satisfaction. That might be cute the first 5 times, but after you've killed a thousand monster, well quite frankly it's enough to drive one up the proverbial wall. NOT FUN. The Hit Boxes. I had my shield up while fighting "Legiana" in the "Coral Highlands"... three other players were in the online session. Now this is just down from the most northern camp. Which as far as I know their are only two camp sites. SO... big wide expansive area. They are in the middle of the map. I'm over to the edge, I have my shield up and was getting ready to heal. Legiana is NOT EVEN CLOSE TO ME. (If I'd thought on it, rather than been caught in utter disbelief I'd recorded it for posterity's sake) my character deflects an invisible attack. I kid you not. The Targeting system. Dark Souls is not perfect, but by and by its a far cry better than this dang game. People have been kind enough to make guides on youtube on how to set up the "camera controls" in the game. Which is awesome. I've utilized said guides. But it's still annoying. In regards to the targeting system, I have it set so that, my character will attack the direction he's facing. BUT do to the way the controls work, and its all "Situational context" more or less, except without the prompts.. the controls change on you. Or the character just does whatever he/she pleases no matter what you thought you should get. Its like gambling to some degree. This is annoying as all get out. Not only have I died(faint) more times than I can count from my character zigging when I wanted them to zag, they also just beat the crap out of the air or ground still yet. Infinitely frustrating. Capcom's slow as ALL get out response to fixing the matchmaking both on the PS4 and the Xbox one.. they've hum hauled around. Its honestly disheartening. Movement speed of your character vs giant monsters. A lot of fellow gamers say, having a weapon that works and is big is silly.. yet you have the monster's and their ballerina act going on where their just as nimble as ballerina's... Really? like that makes sense. IF the physics were right the monsters would be lumbering around, not flipping ninjas. The movement speed of your character and the time it takes for him or her to complete the actions needed vs the time it takes the monster to pull off one of its ninja moves, is ridiculous. Ol "B52" will show you whats what... The fact that they have a "Sheath charm" in the game, just to speed up putting away the weapon shows the development team doesn't know what its doing when it comes to good game design. Update: I have 250+ hours now in the game. How do I feel at this point-Where is everyone? I don't have a clue where I am at as far as the rest of the gamer base.. are they behind me, or ahead of me? I never seem to get any help on my high rank quest? It's frustrating since it plainly tells you in game, that hey "you may need some help to fight this monster" well thanks for the obvious... I still hate the combat system, but I've gotten a lot better through disciplined practice using the charge blade. Things I have grown to hate infinitely about the game, like the burning rage of a 1000 suns. The time limits on the missions. The fact that you already have 3 faints and your out.. that's enough. I hate the time limits at the end of a monster kill. I hate the camera at the end of the quest and how it does. IT FREAKING FOCUSES ON THE MONSTER.. because, hey that's what I want to see when I have a count down time of 60 seconds.. and I'm wanting to carve the monster.. and this stupid camera.. (Whoever thought this was a good idea at Capcom... ???) acts wonky as all get out.. and spends 10 precious seconds focusing on a monster, that I don't need to be told... is obviously incapacitated.. I know this. I did it. I don't need redundancy at this point. The mini games within the mini games, within the mini games. Everything in this game is a mini game unto itself. To gather items, you have to capture bugs.. or fish or whatever.. you have to craft things from components, you can't just use em out right.. its like one of those Russian dolls.. where you just keep un-nesting more dolls.. Trust me, it gets really old after your 10,000th go around. The UI and its usefulness in managing your items.. Its clunky as all get out compared to any game that's grown up. For instance in the investigation quest.. These are like random quest that pop up from your actions. So you get a bunch of garbage quest that have low level rewards.. and theirs no option to "select all" and "delete all.". I have a flip phone from the stone-age that has this functions on the text messages. Here we have a triple A game.. (May be a stretch) and you can't even do this?

Monster Hunter: World is the perfect game to pick up if you are new to the series or if you are a veteran!!!!
Ignore the haters this game is a gem. The monster hunter series is known for being quite difficult and unfriendly to new players. However Monster Hunter: World is easily the most accessible Monster Hunter game that anyone can pick up and play. The game doesn't spoon feed you how to do everything right off the get go, learning the ins and outs is going to take time and patience. There are a ton of different weapons to hunt monsters with and each of those weapons has a multitude of different weapon trees you can build on, but really the most satisfying part of any monster hunter game is reaching a difficult monster where you actually have to prepare traps, potions, and explore the map to devise tactics while taking it on. This is what makes Monster Hunter great and Monster Hunter: World does not disappoint on this aspect. MHW also made some quality of life changes over previous installments that make the game more accessible and less punishing to newcomers.

Great and Challenging game.
I was apprehensive at first with this game, so I rented it first to see how I liked it. However, after playing a little bit, I realized it was a game that I could sink my teeth into. I'm over 100 hours in, and I've not finished the story mode yet, granted, I'm playing solo for the most part and find enjoyment in tooling around and farming things. It has hints of Breath of the Wild in it (another of my recent favorite played games), and has elements in it that I would love to see in games in Diablo 3, in the sense that you can get any piece of equipment in the game with time spent farming. While there is some RNG, it's not terrible, and you're always getting something out of doing a quest. I can't wait to finish the story mode to see what other challenges lie ahead.

Takes me back to the good days of gaming
In a day where the gaming industry is broken. Alpha and beta stage products are the norm for a release and everyone has a "we'll patch it as we go" mentality. This game takes me back to the days when games where actually a finished products when you bought them. The game makers clearly took pride in it. Now, I did not buy it when it was new. It has been several months since this game was first released, but I didn't want to pay full price because I wasn't sure if I would like it. But I'm so glad I did buy it because it's currently one of my favorite games. Well designed, complete, and fun multiplayer in which everything just works really well. It has a very old school Japanese role playing game feel to it. The fighting mechanics are so good and the weapons feel different. There is definitely a learning curve. It's simple enough to jump in and have fun, but challenging enough to take a lot skill to really master. Monsters are challenging too as you progress. Some are really frustrating to fight, in a good way. It makes you want to get stronger and better and go right back in to try to take them down. Love this game.
