This device is used to test coatings on top of steel, aluminum. It will not test the thickness of the metal itself.

It can guage paint through ceramic coats but if you are inquiring for ceramic like pottery no, same will go for plastics as well as it won't pick up unless steel, aluminum etc

The ability to know the paints thickness allowed me to know how much paint stripper to expect to use on a restoration project.
