According to the size chart I should order an XL but I ordered a L (I normally order a large in regular pants and M/L in anything with elastic waist). The L in the color I got was fine, maybe a little loose, but I think a medium might be straining unattractively. You sound like a medium or maybe just go with the size you normally get in shorts and pants. I’m closer to 33 and 43.
