Aqara Door and Window Sensor P2, Thread, Requires Thread Border Router

The Aqara P2 door and window sensor has been an excellent addition to our smart home. We use one on our front door, where it automatically turns the entrance lights on when we arrive home after dark. It responds quickly and makes walking into the house much more convenient.It is also useful for security and peace of mind. We have notifications set up to alert us if the front door is opened while nobody is home, allowing us to check immediately if something unexpected happens.The sensor is compact, discreet and has worked reliably with our automations. Overall, the P2 is a simple but very effective smart-home device that I would happily recommend.

I bought these to put on my office door and set up an automation so I get an alert on my phone whenever the door is opened while the room is shut. I also linked it to my Echo, so it announces “Get out, owner has been alerted” if someone opens the door. It works perfectly and triggers instantly.It’s ideal for when you have guests round — especially if they have kids who like to snoop — because you know straight away if someone opens the door. Easy to set up, reliable, and works great with Matter and Thread.A really solid contact sensor if you want proper smart‑home security and automation.

Brough two of these now and the quality is so poor, the first came and had an audible rattle and would not turn on when the battery tab removed, the reset button had no feel to a button.The second unit would not reset it flash red to indicated an error it should breath a blue colour until it has paired nothing can see this unit looks like the Bluetooth module might have failed.I'm giving up on this brand and not trying for a third.

The matter standard, as we all know, is extremely hit-and-miss. So I added these to SmartThings and shared them with Home Assistant, and this has worked perfectly. I will be getting rid of the SmartThings integration in HA come October, as Samsung have done a rug pull and are gonna charge 4;99 a month for it. Forget that ! But we can still use the SmartThings app to commission devices and share them to HA . Anyway, I have tested many contact sensors, and this one has proved most reliable. I have about 5 in use, and every so often one will drop off the network and become unavailable(hence the 4 stars), but 99% of the time they come back themselves and it is quite a rare occasion for the initial drop-off. I buy them when they go on sale, and after testing stuff from Aqara, Candeo and Sonoff, these are the ones I would recommend most. A+++

My original Samsung Smartthings Multipurpose sensor worked intermittently for a number of years, but eventually failed. So I replaced it with a new one from Samsung's new supplier Aeotec. This was completely useless and took me an hour just to connect it to the Samsung hub. It worked intermittently for a day, so I returned it as unreliable.Instead, I bought the Aqara Door and Window Sensor P2 which worked perfectly. I started the Smartthings App, then pulled out the battery isolator tag from the Aqara device and the App recognised it straight away. I didn't even have to add a new device. I scanned the QR code and the device was installed automatically. I only had to specify which room I wanted it in. Works perfectly and only took a minute to install.

This is one of the first Thread- and Matter-based devices from Aqara.Thread devices are still fairly new to market and I've found that some other competing devices are quite buggy. This one was very straightforward and worked exactly as expected.The sensor is supplied with strong adhesive strips and also an optional magnet if required. I found the adhesive was more than sufficient to stick to the door and door-frame.Most older Aqara devices are Zigbee-based and need an Aqara hub, which acts as a Matter bridge to Apple Home, Alexa or Google Home. This sensor directly supports Matter-over-Thread, so no additional hub was required. Instead it connects wirelessly with my Apple TV which contains a Thread border router.Installation to Apple Home was a breeze; it paired very quickly after scanning the Matter QR code and then appeared in the Home dashboard. After that it was very easy to set up automations; I've set it to turn the kitchen heating off if the back door is open. The device responds almost instantly to opening and closing.Time will tell in terms of battery life.I wish all smart home devices were this simple!

1. You will not know if battery is discharged as there is no battery indicator in the app so if you go for holiday you might find out battery died next day you left home making this device useless for your home safety.2. It is not visible in Aqara app like it would not belong to Aquara which means you will NOT be able to create "Alarm" when someone will break in to your home.3. It is quite BIG compared to previous Aqara Door sensor making your doors more ugly.4. Very expensive device for all those problems which make this device useless.

Paired first time with my Apple TV via my iPhone using the thread protocol. I use this for home automations, it turns my office light on when I open the door. It's also used for an alarm system all using Apple Home and Home Assistant. Got this on a deal so the price was good. It's light weight and has an adhesive pad on the back for mounting. Already have 2 and may still get more in future.

05/10/24 Edit: I wasn't able to establish a proper connection between the sensor and Google Home at first using Google Nest Hub Maxes. After connecting the sensor to Google Home, the sensor would show that it was offline. My solution to this was to bring together and separate the sensor and the magnet several times after adding the sensor to Google Home. After doing this, the sensor finally appeared as online on Google Home.5/17/24 Edit: Two sensors were unstable with my Google Nest Hub Maxes, despite the closest Hub Max being only about three feet away. It kept appearing as offline and online randomly. I also tried connecting them to an Aqara Hub M3 (about four feet away) and an Aeotec SmartThings Home Hub (about four feet away) with no success. I connected them to a Samsung SmartThings Station (about seven feet away). So far for the last three days, the connection between the Samsung SmartThings Station and the sensor has been stable with no issues.

Era un po' che volevo prenderlo ma dovevo prima attrezzarmi con un antenna che mi facesse da thread border router per home assistant. Associato in 20 secondi, direi senza problemi anche se alla fine della procedura ho ricevuto un messaggio di errore, ho premuto ok e il sensore è apparso comunque. Adoro thread per non intasare la mia rete wifi. Possibilità di visualizzare la batteria residua, cambi di stato pressoché istantanei. In futuro ne prenderò sicuramente altri. Unica nota negativa sono le etichette applicate sul sensore che lasciano un sacco di residui di colla su di esso che ho rimosso con dell' alcool isopropilico.
