When it arrived on the big screen in 1987, Paul Verhoeven's RoboCop was like a high-voltage jolt of electricity, blending satire, thrills, and abundant violence with such energized gusto that audiences couldn't help feeling stunned and amazed. The movie was a huge hit, and has since earned enduring cult status as one of the seminal science fiction films of the 1980s. Followed by two sequels, a TV series, and countless novels and comic books, this original RoboCop is still the best by far, largely due to the audacity and unbridled bloodlust of director Verhoeven. However, the reasons many enjoyed the film are also the reasons some will surely wish to avoid it. Critic Pauline Kael called the movie a dubious example of "gallows pulp," and there's no denying that its view of mankind is bleak, depraved, and graphically violent. In the Detroit of the near future, a policeman (Peter Weller) is brutally gunned down by drug-dealing thugs and left for dead, but he survives (half of him, at least) and is integrated with state-of-the-art technology to become a half-robotic cop of the future, designed to revolutionize law enforcement. As RoboCop holds tight to his last remaining shred of humanity, he relentlessly pursues the criminals who "killed" him. All the while, Verhoeven (from a script by Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner) injects this high-intensity tale with wickedly pointed humour and satire aimed at the men and media who cover a city out of control. --Jeff Shannon, desertcart.com Paul Verhoeven directs this classic sci-fi action feature starring Peter Weller. Set in the near future, Detroit's soaring crime rate is unsuccessfully policed by a corporation which plans to build a new city. When the new 'enforcement droid' proves unworkable, a murdered cop (Weller) is wired into a computer-controlled titanium body and set to the task at hand. Unimpressed, 'Robocop' seeks vengeance on all sides in this violent but often funny tale. Review: You’re move creep - Loved this film from the first day I saw it . Review: Criminally overlooked - Just pre ordered this on Steelbook, partly due to a sickness that I have for collecting Steelbooks but mostly because this is one of the greatest films ever made. A lot of stuck up film snobs might sneer at that last comment as they will try to lump Robocop in with all the other over the top action films of the 80's, but I am here to tell them that if they feel like that they are missing the point of the film. Yes this film has a lot of action, very violent action at that, but it is as much a comment on the degradation of society as it is for cinematic spectacle. The visuals in this film are stunning and save for a bit of dodgy blue screen every now and again the special effects still stand up today. And yes, I said blue screen. That is what us old timers used before green screen. The satirical nature of this film is ever present, from the aforementioned violence to the news reports and the apocalyptic family board game. This film takes swipes at modern society from all angles and over 25 years later those themes are still relevant. I would recommend this film to anyone really as there are so many different ways to approach it that I feel most people could take something from it. I first saw this film when I was ten years old and can remember seeing it for the first time, but still now with every watch it remains fresh. If you haven't seen it before, see it. If you have seen it before, just watch it again as you know you are going to love it.

Criminally overlooked
Just pre ordered this on Steelbook, partly due to a sickness that I have for collecting Steelbooks but mostly because this is one of the greatest films ever made. Fantastic edition for fans and collectors
This is a really neat collectors package for Robocop fans. Comes with both the theatrical and directors cut (the latter having scenes extended, noticeably in two of the movies more graphic shootings). The 4K master is done really well in my opinion, it retains a respectful amount of the original film grain, whilst adding the level of detail you would expect from an UHD upgrade. The use of a wide colour gamut and Dolby Vision is welcome adding extra vibrancy and depth to certain highlights and settings. Sure, there are occasional shots in scenes where the enhancements seem to have been missed out, which look even more apparent, probably because the rest of the content looks much more improved, but they are infrequent. The additional content that comes included (collectors cards, booklet etc), make this a great package for Robocop fans. Definitely the current most premium way to enjoy the movie, a nice addition to any collection. (Watched on an LG CX oled and Panasonic DPUB820)

Brilliant film, great value copy
Two films for the price, one the original cinema release and the Director's Cut. I watched the Director's Cut on receiving this, and to be honest I couldn't see the difference. But irrespective of this, and despite the slightly dated visual effects, in the main this film is stand out cult viewing. No sequels were necessary, but business is business. Verhoeven broke the mould here though. The satire on US society then and now is brilliant, if not a little spooky in it's foretelling of how corruption rules in the world of big corporations. One can only believe this is how things would be if a major software company were in charge of policing! But it's the little touches such as the interruptions to the news of out of place adverts, and the return to white toothed, tanned presenters smiling as they discuss more street murders and violence. The film works on many levels, obvious hero's but troubled, corrupt power hungry old white men, and a glorious villain in Clarence Bodicker. But if you don't like gore then don't watch. Verhoeven doesn't spare the viewer from any of the grisly scenes of mutilation and death.

Worth it, if you're a RoboCop fan.
This is for the LIMITED EDITION ARROW release of RoboCop. Just in case this shows up elsewhere. Have always been a fan of the movie and most of us have already seen it by this point. It's a solid science fiction action/horror and one of the very finest to ever be created. The bad: This is the same master that already exists at a less expensive entry point. Minor clean up aside. The good: New extra features alone are worth the price of admission. You also get the Theatrical cut of the movie along with the full length "edited for TV" version, which is still hysterical and fascinating that the producers shot so many alternate takes to replace the violence. ED-209 gunning an exec down with no blood anywhere is hilarious. If you're a fan of RoboCop then this is well worth the money. Also includes a set of postcards, poster and new booklet on the making of process.

Great Film, Ok On Blu Ray
The Blu Ray version of this classic movie is a bit of a mixed bag. The opening low def TV news channel sequences don't really set a good mark for a blu ray and in truth i was worried that this film would be in the "awful transfer section" of the blu ray bargain bin. Im happy to say its not all doom and gloom. The majority of the movie is vibrant and looks good on blu ray and the HD multi channel sound was good. Back on the flip side Some scenes appear a little grainy and the "what robocop sees" scenes are shown from behind a the multi line 1987 impression of what his display would be like, along with the news/advert scenes "poor quality broadcasts" which are in stark contrast to much of the rest of the movie. I feel the blu ray makes these difference in picture quality far more extreme than previous media types, although far from perfect it is the best version around at this time. If the usual cash in on Anniversaries kicks in this movies next land mark date won't be till 2012 should they decide to remaster it for a 25 year role out. Film scores 5/5 In comparrison to recently made blu ray releases Picture quality 3/5 Sound Quality 4/5 Im sure some folks will disagree with me but having watched the trilogy DVD release in both standard and upscaled for comparison on the scenes i felt where weak in the blu-ray and the blu ray wins the day for me.

Classic.
Me and the Missus went to see the new Robocop reboot at the cinema. It was okay by the way, but not a patch on this. My other half insisted that the new one was better and the old one was naff and dated. So I dug out my Criterion copy on DVD to prove her wrong. But the picture quality was terrible, hence me buying this! :D This is the best version of the film available imo. Amazing picture quality and sound (in comparison with my dvd), the film still holds up today too and blows the new cgi-fest out of the water. Was it worth the £18 I paid? Well, it was a bit steep for a film that came out so long ago, but I'd say yes still. Only thing that bothered me at all....and yes, I know this is petty....they changed the font on the cover...bring back the original font!! :P

Still all too relevant
A fine film, comic book on the surface with considerable depth and biting satire with a vision of a future dystopia which is still relevant today. I used this film as the basis for essay theses when teaching undergraduate students freshman English in the USA back in 1990 whilst I was a PhD student, such a pity their generation seem to have embraced its nightmare rather than heeded its warning! To be fair, they understood the film far better than the other film I used (Apocalypse Now) or the book it was based on (Heart Of Darkness). This was, and remains, a cinematic milestone.

Don't wait! Get this fully-loaded fan-pleasing Blu-ray now! "YOU HAVE 20 SECONDS TO COMPLY."
BOTTOM LINE: One of the greatest sci-fi/action/drama mash-ups EVER made, from ANY decade. This, the original ROBOCOP, is by far the best version to ever roll off the OCP assembly line; superior in most every aspect to its many sequels, offshoots & remakes. And this fantastic Blu-ray offering from Arrow Video is equally superior to all previous home video editions. Toss any inferior versions you have onto the scrap pile now and pony up for this super-deluxe 2-disc Arrow Blu. 5 STARS THOUGHTS: Such an important touchstone and ground breaker of a film that many are still attempting to emulate its visual & visceral esthetic, more than 30 years later. A movie that not only entertained as a terrific piece of science fiction but also fully delivered as an over-the-top action movie, too. And yet what has helped it remain relevant all these years later is the story behind the hero's humanity, his loss of it & subsequent struggle to reclaim it, which still resonates with audiences who probably were never expecting to be moved in such a way by a film of this type. A true case of capturing lightning in a bottle, ROBOCOP managed to hit all the right notes, from beginning to end: writing, directing, casting, acting, music, production design, visual & practical effects, editing, sound design... everything. THE BLU-RAY: A superlative 2-disc release from Arrow Video, it gives us what is likely the best home video presentation yet. This set offers both the original theatrical cut of the film, as well as the longer Director's Cut. Both versions offer sharp focus, faithful color reproduction, strong sound replication and a wealth of excellent bonus features geared towards the hardcore fanbase of the film. No artifacting, edge enhancement, pixelation, crush or other video uglies to sour your enjoyment of whichever cut you prefer. In short, if you've been hedging on whether to buy a copy of the film yourself, OR if you've been considering upgrading to Blu-ray if you only have the film on DVD or VHS, then THIS is the edition to buy. You won't be disappointed. Highly, highly recommended.
