Unconventional family drama from writer-director Matt Ross. Viggo Mortensen stars as Ben, a father raising his six children Bodevan (George MacKay), Kielyr (Samantha Isler), Vespyr (Annalise Basso), Rellian (Nicholas Hamilton), Zaja (Shree Crooks) and Nai (Charlie Shotwell) in the isolated forests of the Pacific Northwest. As a result of their rural location the children have been sheltered from popular culture supplemented with Ben's rigorous home-schooling which imparts to them a left-leaning education in which Noam Chomsky's birthday is celebrated as if it's Christmas. When a tragic event propels the family unit into reality, they find themselves much at odds with their fellow citizens and Ben's parenting methods are scrutinised. The film was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Performance By an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama (Mortensen), the BAFTA for Best Leading Actor (Mortensen) and the Academy Award for Best Actor (Mortensen). Review: Must-see film - Fantastic film. Brilliant for all the family Review: Great - Great film, lots of laughs and a brilliant storyline. Thoroughly enjoyable way to spend the evening!

FANTASTIC MOVIE about a fantastic theme. if only more people in the world would notice that there are too many people already on
Good movie...I really love Viggo - have seen most of his films. The whole premise of this film was interesting. Well done.

Captain Fantastic is Fantastic.
One of those wild stories set in the wilds of the good ol' US of A. Though I dare say there are families of such "Nature" that exist, this is truly an increadible exposé of juxtapositions. Our very essense, as creatures of the nature, and our over developed modern but disjointed enforced lifestyle in the western world is very well exposed. A father of 8 youngsters choses to leave behind the confinds of systematic modern life and live in the natural world having previously bought a large area of forest land. Here they are learning, training and surviving off the land. However, the children's bipolar mother is in hospital under close watch having had a serious downturn in which other mental health concerns take a strong hold and eventually she succumbs. Distraught and determined Dad, with his young family, make their way across the USA to her funeral; organised by their staunchly religeous grandfather. However, he blames the husband (Captain Fantastic) for making her condition worse. He is warned off that if they come near the funeral service he'll have this decadent nature/survivalist and harbinger of his daughter's death, arrested and the children taken into care. This story highlights a struggle of rights, autonamy, growing up, enlightened knowledge seeking, egos, preferences, incompatabilities and self-realisation. The genre is a strong "rights of passage" and "fish out of water" story. Characters are brilliantly portrayed by all the players, fabulous settings, 1st class script. Totally loved it. This has become one of my all-time favourite family movies.

From start to finish, a great film about parenthood
Wonderfully photographed taking the spectator through a different style of upbringing in the outdoors. Through comparisons with traditional schooling an exploration of education in a broader sense. Gifted performances by all the children involved. An enjoyable and thought-provoking film

Spoiler Alert: Captain Fantastic
SPOILER ALERT, please don’t read this if you don’t want the plot of the story to be reveal pre-viewing. Viggo Mortensen - basically - if you like Viggo, you’re gonna love this movie. If you’re banking on it being part of the Marvel or DC verse, think again. Viggo basically is a father with morals trying to raise kids without outside influences from modern day society (and achieving great things with most of them). His estranged wife, who is suffering from some kind of mental illness, is away from her family for treatment at a hospital and whilst there dies, the insinuation is that she has actually ended her own life. Her conventional and extremely judgmental parent’s, prepare their daughter for burial ignoring the wishes laid down officially in her last will and testament, whilst Viggo and the kids embark on an epic journey of discovery (on the kid’s part) to reclaim the corpse of their mother/wife, to allow THEM to fulfil her last wishes of cremation (after which her ashes should be flushed down a public toilet!). I enjoyed it’s bittersweet nature and all the up’s and down’s any average family would encounter in the experiences of becoming self-sufficient and going back to basics. It’s a believable performance from both Viggo and all the great little actors playing the family kids too. Recommended.

Thought provoking.
Wonderful story about a very unconventual family living in isolation in the dense west coast forests of the USA. The mother dies and the family leaves the security of their forest home to fulfil the wishes in her will. Conflict with her parents results in chaos which is resolved in a unique and entertaining movie. Highly recommend it.

Best unseen film of the past few years
I haven't had time to watch this one yet but am so happy to have received it and at a great price. This movie was ignored by audiences a couple of years ago and it's too bad because they missed out on a superlative film with a standout Oscar nominated performance by Viggo Mortensen. I guess a better title would have gotten more people into theatres maybe. But this is one film not to miss. It's exceptional.
