Here's my OPITION on the Suunto Vertical
I just sold my Garmin Delta Solar with Ballistics, so my compair will be against that. The good bad and ugly, I've owned about 5 different Suunto's in the past and for me I like the simplicity of them. The Vertical is a step above those now. A touch screen and for me it's not a big seller, more of a oh I forgot it has that. It take a bit to understand the menu's and how to navigate them. A bit of grrrr with trying how to back out of a few of the interfaces, but thats about it. Some people have complained about being laggy, I haven't notice any of that quite yet, but I did also get a update when first configured. It's very very light, almost don't know I'm wearing it, and being such a large face thats a plus. Battery lifes seems pretty good, I wore it two days and used about 5% a day, I turned off Notifcations, but when enabled worked just prefect. On thing I did notice is the weather alert, that was always something I liked about the Suunto. I enabled storm warning, but yesterday we had a storm roll in the late afternoon and I did not get a storm warning, so that has my attention to see if it happens again. I haven't used much of the other apps yet but will test the gps in the next few days to make sure that's working correctly. I do like they include actual maps that you can download to your watch now and in color. I wish they allowed users to modify the watch faces, there are things that I want and others I don't. They have a bunch to choose from but just not what I wanted. For context I just sold a Garmin Tactix Delta with Ballistics. I really liked that one, but battery didn't quite meetup to what was promised, even with the solar and I didn't really have alot of battery draining process running. It lasted maybe a week or 5 days. Really good watch but the face was a bit to crowded and I'm older and eyes just can't see that small anymore. I still think these are way over prices for a basiclly a smart watch, but will probably come down at some point in the future. Bottem line, I think it's worth the purchase and if you are out and about there are tons of apps for those hobbies. Biggest disappointment beside not being able to configure the watch face is the wonky charger, it's about 1ft and wire thin, one tug and it's probably going to break.

Suunto stepped up on this model
Suunto stepped it up on this model. Iโve had 3 other Suunto watches over the past 10 years and they have always been great quality. Super comfortable on the wrists, easy to use, brightness is perfect even on the highest brightness setting isnโt too bright. Nice clear display and solid quality. I do recommend purchasing some glass face protection to help avoid breaking the main glass face. The only downside side is the wrist band is silicone and it seems like you will need to replace it within the year especially if you plan on wearing your watch full time. Last but not least buy this watch you will not be disappointed!

The ultimate smart watch for the outdoor enthusiast!
This is my fourth Suunto watch purchase and by far, the best. I am an avid hiker and climber and this watch has exceeded my expectations. The battery life is tremendous and no other watch comes close to it. It is easy to operate and navigate and is extremely durable. If you are an outdoor enthusiast of any kind this is the watch to have and use on your adventures!

Well, I like it.
It's a departure from the Garmin I had, so the operating of the watch takes a little to get used to. However, the display is clean and i like the features. It's also a lot lighter. It could be that my old garmin tactix was just too old, but this one is remarkably lighter. I also like the solar charging function. Pretty cool.

Some outstanding implementations, and some stumbles
This would be a really nice watch for anyone that uses route guidance extensively, but doesn't care about wrist based heart rate or maybe 24/7 wear. First the pros: * Truly awesome implementation of route guidance that is very visible. Route management and creation through the app is also implemented very well. This is the best implementation I've seen across Garmin, Polar and Coros. It captures essential information, doesn't try to put too much on the screen and has a very responsive compass. Note however that these maps are not routable - they mostly provide context when navigating. * Great design - this is a nice looking watch that isn't as big as some, but has a nice presence on the wrist. * Battery life - I found the battery life to be comparable to, if not better than the Garmin Gen 1 Enduro. Solar also seems to make a difference in battery life as well. * Features tend to be pared down relative to Garmin, but I felt they had a good grasp of what was essential on the watch, so they didn't overcomplicate things. Cons: * There are some strange inconsistencies in the UI - for instance the placement of interval settings. I had trouble finding this reliably for some reason. * There are sharp angles where the watch meets the wrist, and it isn't always comfortable -- especially at night, or when the band was tightened down. People with more flesh on their arms probably won't have an issue. * The heart rate readings (for me) were way off. There was a very specific placement on my wrist that would help, but it is not where I'd normally wear it. The watch needed to be quite snug - to the point of discomfort, which was exacerbated by the hard angular nature of the watch (see previous point). * Related to the above - Suunto only allows pairing one bluetooth heart rate sensor (I have three). It would be one thing if the OHR on the wrist worked well, but for me it did not. I typically use at least two external HR sensors - my chest strap causes bad chaffing in the very warm weather, and so I will wear a polar OH1 on my arm instead. * Sleep tracking didn't work for me, but then again I've never found a watch that was able to measure this for me. So for some people (ultrarunners come to mind), this is a watch worthy of consideration. Suunto really has produced a nice product. I think where they need to work is on the optical heart rate sensor, which is a generation or two behind both Polar and Garmin. If they fixed that, they would have a real winner, IMO. Edit: Suunto updated the firmware for the heart rate sensor in the latest quarterly update for the watch (7/2024), and now the sensor works much better.

Less adventure and more fitness oriented.
Suunto Vertical Pros -Great accuracy -Simple and easy watch user experience -Excellent battery life -Lightweight but rugged -Caiters to the fitness crowd vs adventurers -Good value for the money Cons -Suunto was purchased by a Chinese company. -Suunto is leaning and catering more towards fitness and less towards the adventuring customers. -Solar charging is sort of a gimmick. However, battery life is superb. -Watch bands will snag. Easy to replace with โApple Watchโ style bands. -Cannot import POIs on the app, only routes. -Can only download offline maps to the watch and not also to the phone app. -The searching of GPS coordinates in the app will fail or return the wrong location (this is a safety issue). There is no way to input coordinates on the app (since is broken), or the watch if say, someone gives you coordinates over a radio. SAR folks beware of this. -Every time there is a watch update, some customizations on the watch will reset. -Inability to input GPS coordinates directly into the watch independent of the phone app. You can scroll the map and set a POI but if you have no phone and someone, letโs say gives you GPS coordinates over the radio, you will not be able to input those and navigate. It is a shame because this watch is very accurate. Do not depend on this watch as the main navigation device. Take a Garmin GPS with you into the back country or into SAR/LEO/Mil ops. Only use it as a supplement. Seems since Suunto is now owned by Chinese technology company Liesheng Technology, will be departing from its Finish adventuring traditions. Letโs hope quality does not continue to decline. Alternative is the Garmin Tactix 7 or 8.

Durable, Accurate & Elegant.
The construction, durability and battery life is almost unbeatable. This is perfect for those who want a reliable GPS watch that does what is designed to do without the extra bells and whistles. Works great for sea kayaking as you can set a bearing and the offline map shows enough detail to navigate narrow channels between islands. I was able to navigate an open water crossing with many shoals in the dark and pin point my base camp witch would have been tricky using traditional methods - Also used for hiking. The flashlight function witch is just a bright screen actually comes in handy on trips and in everyday life. Made in Finland, I highly recommend

Nice style and great performance. Has all the features I need. I have owned 5 generations of Suunto watches over the past 30 Years and must say Suunto has outdone themselves with this one. It has everything!
