I have a small and fragile long haired chihuahua. Do these clippers come with various speeds and a protective guard that would prevent injury?

No they do not come with a guard but it does have two speeds, low and high

Blade gets very hot after just a few minutes of use, is there something wrong with the unit? This should not be happening

The blades will naturally get hot from use, and the speed also affects how fast they heat up. If yours is a 2 speed try using the slower speed. Also, you may wish to have a second set of blades so you can periodically change the blades out to allow them to cool down during extended periods of use. This will also help them last longer.

Either are fine. I have the Andis 22340 and using the Andis UltraEdge Detachable Clipper Blade 3 3/4 skip tooth it cuts extremely well on the tight knit poodle fur. Just use short strokes when cutting because as with any dog the longer your cut the more prone it is to get caught.
