Will this catch rats? Has anybody actually caught rats?

I have not. I think it might catch rats, but rats are heavy and large enough that they may be able to escape. I've seen rats escape. They're ingenious. It might jump high enough as to hit the lid, pop it open, jump a second time before it closes and escape. This trap is better suited for smaller rodents.

Why is the ladder so flimsy?

Although the ladder looked and felt a bit flimsy at first, for any critter the size of a mouse or small rat, the ladder is sturdy. in order for the shipping box to be reasonably sized, the ladder is made of two pieces which snap together. That joint flexes a bit, but I have not had an issue with it. I've caught a bunch of mice without issue. Although this trap might well work for mid size rats, I don't think this trap is meant for them. If I ever catch a rat the size of a hamster, I'll glue the two halves together. More importantly, I will buy a trap designed for them and also figure out how something that large got into the building.
