If I understand your question correctly, the answer is no, a mono rca output signal passing through this cable will not emerge on the other end as a 5.1 channel output simply by traveling through the cable.

PCM DIGITAL STEREO :pulse code modulation. I used as stereo audio output cable for my CD player and my blu-Ray audio only. Not for multi -channel movie sound. I use alot of audio and movie discs. Have used digital audio RCA cables as mono amp connection to pre-amp.

Can this cable be used to replace the yellow video RCA cable from my DVD player to my TV?  I use a separate dual RCA cable for my speakers

No, this cable is for sound only. I am using it to connect audio from the Blu-ray player directly to a sound bar, and the yellow RCA video cable is connected from the Blu-ray to the TV; in other words, you still need the cable for video and you will end up using the 'Mediabridge ULTRA Series' cable for digital audio. The only advantage this cable provides is great sound by using just one cable instead of the old fashion left and right audio cables, plus it can deliver up to a 7.1 sound system depending on where you plug it. In my case, it is plugged to my sound bar by Yamaha which can deliver all 7.1 signals to the room where I play my movies. Also, if you decide to buy this cable, you have to make sure you have the connections to use it. Most newer DVD, Blu-ray players and high-definition TV's have the connection, but not older models!
