Perfect for in cabin baggage on flights.
I needed a new bag and ordered one of these. As soon as it arrived, it was obvious it was going to be a great bag and so, naturally, my son stole it. I ordered a second one - don't worry.Great value for money, well made and with carry handles plus rucksack straps which can be hidden away. The quality of the fabric is good and I suspect it will last a good number of years, the pockets are well padded with a top smaller pocket, ideal for documents and small items. Next to that is the laptop pocket which will take a full sized laptop although I use a Surface which the bag swallowed. There is room for two devices or a device and documents/folder/notebook.The main luggage area is enough for a man to carry two or three weeks worth of stuff - women, maybe a week, we all know what you're like. It's a good size with a net zip pocket and with careful packing fits everything you would need. My son and I used ours on a week's trip to Morocco and the Sahara and everything easily fit.The final pocket is really only for the straps to be hidden away, but it will also take items whilst the straps are not in use. I wouldn't recommend putting anything important in this part of the bag because the zip is open when the straps are being used, so not as secure. There is also an expansion zip for the main compartment so that you can fit more in. However, be warned; if you intend to take the bag as cabin baggage, especially on Ryanair, using the expansion will take the bag over the minimum dimensions. However, we noticed that as we wore them like a rucksack, no one gave our bags a second glance - they are at the limit of the dimensions and we thought we might get checked. However, they fitted, when full into the Ryanair cages used to check bag sizes, so it was all good.Sits well on your back when carrying it and has carry handles like a suitcase to carry it vertically or horizontally. All in all, a great purchase and fully recommended.Only downside is having two identical bags we sometimes got mixed up - different colours might be nice.

It will in fact securely take a 17" laptop. Nicely made and excellent value for money.
I was initially a bit concerned that the "Amazon Basics" moniker might imply inferior quality. However my fears were quite unfounded and this really is a very well made, and practical bag.You can have it on a single shoulder strap, or wear packpack style. There's also some straps look like they would do for fastening to a baggage trolley.Perfect for short trips, as there's easily enough room for 3/4 days worth of clothes. For this trip, the bag wasn't bought for carrying a laptop, however I found that the internal the laptop compartment will securely take a 17" laptop (i.e. the computer is fully covered and the retaining strap will fasten). This is bigger than the 15" in the description, and I would suggest Amazon update their advertisement. Particularly when I've just returned a supposedly 17" laptop rucksack, which turned out would only fit a smaller machine.Overall, very impressed.

Probably the maximum size you can possibly go whilst still being able to call it a backpack/rucksack
Probably the maximum size you can possibly go whilst still being able to call it a backpack/rucksack. One you've put all your clothes and etc in for your holiday, it's on the limit of what you can call a backpack. I've used it to fly with EASYJET a couple of times and didn't have an issue. I had to slide the big bag under the seat infront of me, leaving only a narrow gap for one of my legs down the side (You need to pay extra to have a carry-on that could go in the overhead storage). The tightening straps are useful to pull tight so it doesn't look as heafty in size. There is also straps inside so you can pull tight to compact your clothes a bit more. The bag also has a laptop sleve at the back, which is difficult to slide your laptop in when the rest of the bag if full of clothes etc, but once you get it in it's fine. I put my laptop in a foam cover for extra protection - sometimes you forget how big the bag is and occasionally bang it on a lampost of fence as your walking by. The zips etc are all high quality, no issues there. the flap/storage bit at the front is quite useful and big, would be ideal if you have a really small laptop or ipad - lots of extra pockets in there too for external hardrives and battery packs - Overall it's a high quality bag, I'd probably only ever use it for the low cost airlines because it's the biggest backpack you can get that can fit under the seat infront of you - The low cost airlines hardly ever check the sizes or weight of carry-on bags (that's if you go straight through security and don't go to the check-in desk) they make everyone queue up ages before it's time to get on the plane, so when the time comes, they're under pressure to get everyone on the plane because passengers have been waiting so long - they don't bother checking anyone.

Rough and tough
Had some weeks now. It's good; rough and tough and tons of zips and pockets.

Great kit at great price
We bought these to use on a European rail trip. Very versatile and well made and enabled us to carry all we needed within the baggage size limits when using Ouigo high speed trains.

Best choice
By far the best budget backpack with a solid build, great space, minimalist but practical design and good zips. My only concern is if it would be allowed as a personal item on budget airlines like eurowings, jet2 or ryan air.

Serious flaw with the compression zip
I bought this bag as a replacement for my Ebags TLS Mother Lode Weekender Convertible carry-on backpack, which was stolen a couple of weeks ago. It was the best carry on bag I've owned but they're no longer available unless you was a very expensive US import from ebay. The Amazon Basics Carry-On Travel Backpack is basically a copy of that bag and I have to say it's 95% there. The hard-wearing quality of the material, handles and stitching seems just as good as the Ebags version. Zips are not quite as good but good enough. Overall for the price I'm very happy although I suppose I won't know how good it really is until I've used it for a few years.2024 update: serious flaw with the bag compression zip
