Do Mr. Potato Head's body parts pop in-and-out easily enough for a 2 year old to do it on their own?

My two year old, who is fairly dexterous with his hands, could insert and remove the eyes, nose, ears and mouth without much difficulty. The arms are tighter and he needed some help getting them in and out initially, however after a bit of practise he can get them in half way, just enough that they stay. The butt-flap can also be easily removed but is much trickier to line up to click back in - he can't do it and sometimes gets frustrated trying - but hey, if it was all too easy he'd be bored of it by now ! He absolutely loves the toy - carried it everywhere with him for the first week and several months later he still plays with it on and off.

Do the pieces fit a classic mr. potato head? like from 30+ years ago?

The eyes, noses, mouths, ears, and arms will fit. The legs will not fit where the feet go on an older potato, but they could work as a hat. The actual hats may or may not depending on the hat.

Can you store the extra pieces inside the potato like the old ones used to?

Yes you can store prices inside Mr potato head but not all of the pieces will fix as you get many with this set.
