Can i leave this in my car while i go out for a day hike? I don't want my car destroyed.

It’s not like air tight so bears can smell through it. I don’t think they will be able to destroy your car though. If you are nervous though, take the BV out and hide it somewhere in the woods away from your car

How thick is the plastic?

Not sure how thick it is , but when i went hiking and camping in the Colorado mountains i used it as a seat to set on at night and it held up fine

How is it different than using a cheaper aluminum screw cap jar?

Bears open a screw top jar. You have to squeeze the top on the bear vault and turn it at the same time. Not so easy. Bears can also Just break jars. This is made of heavy duty plastic
