From renowned cardiac surgeon Steven R. Gundry, MD, the New York Times bestselling The Plant Paradox is a revolutionary look at the hidden compounds in "healthy" foods like fruit, vegetables, and whole grains that are causing us to gain weight, trigger inflammation, and develop chronic disease. Most of us have heard of glutenโa protein found in wheat that causes widespread inflammation in the body. Americans spend billions of dollars on gluten-free diets in an effort to protect their health. But what if weโve been missing the root of the problem? In The Plant Paradox , renowned cardiologist Dr. Steven Gundry reveals that gluten is just one variety of a common, and highly toxic, plant-based protein called lectin. Lectins are found not only in grains like wheat but also in the โgluten-freeโ foods most of us commonly regard as healthy, including many fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans, and conventional dairy products. These proteins, which are found in the seeds, grains, skins, rinds, and leaves of plants, are designed by nature to protect them from predators (including humans). Once ingested, they incite a kind of chemical warfare in our bodies, causing inflammatory reactions that can lead to weight gain, leaky gut syndrome, and serious health conditions. At his waitlist-only clinics in California, Dr. Gundry has successfully treated tens of thousands of patients suffering from autoimmune disorders, diabetes, leaky gut syndrome, heart disease, and neurodegenerative diseases with a protocol that detoxes the cells, repairs the gut, and nourishes the body. Now, in The Plant Paradox , this essential healthy eating guide shares his clinically proven program with readers around the world. The simple (and daunting) fact is, lectins are everywhere. Thankfully, Dr. Gundry offers simple hacks we easily can employ to avoid them, including: Peel your veggies. Most of the lectins are contained in the skin and seeds of plants; simply peeling and de-seeding vegetables (like tomatoes and peppers) reduces their lectin content. Shop for fruit in season. Fruit contain fewer lectins when ripe, so eating apples, berries, and other lectin-containing fruits at the peak of ripeness helps minimize your lectin consumption. Swap your brown rice for white. Whole grains and seeds with hard outer coatings are designed by nature to cause digestive distressโand are full of lectins. With a full list of lectin-containing foods and simple substitutes for each, a step-by-step detox and eating plan, and delicious lectin-free recipes, The Plant Paradox illuminates the hidden dangers lurking in your salad bowlโand shows you how to eat whole foods in a whole new way. Strictly eliminating foods with these bad lectins completely clear up all my symptoms
This book is a MUST READ if you suffer from any kind of autoimmune disease. I've had psoriasis, joint pains and stomach issues for 20 years and tried almost everything I could find. Avoiding certain lectins, as described in the book by Dr. Gundry, is the ONLY thing that has been able to completely clear up all my symptoms (and within days). I have always followed the official recommendations to always opt for whole grains and eaten lot's of Nightshade fruits and vegetables. Little have I known that I have only damaged myself all these years by eating that stuff. Strictly eliminating foods with these bad lectins completely clear up all my symptoms. I do not care what the critics of Dr. Gundry say, because IT REALLY WORKS FOR ME when I take the bad lectins completely away! If I e.g. just eat a single cashew nut, a slice of whole grain bread or a small portion of mashed potatoes then my issues start again about 2-4 hours later and it will continue for a day or two. Again: Staying completely away from these bad lectins foods completely keep my symptoms away. This book contain the most important health information that I have ever learned. and if you too also have an autoimmune disease I strongly recommend that you at least try following the plant paradox for a period of time. It is a well written book by a highly reputable MD. It is easy to read and understand and the claims are backed up with reputable scientific references and based on his works with thousands and thousands of real people over many years.

If you're doing keto you're 90% there!
This book It is without doubt very informative and the knowledge is certainly good to know. The book is packed with amazing and enlightening detail but the book contradicts itself quite a lot which adds confusion to what is already a mine field. Don't eat animals that are fed on grain, that includes organic meat - 'we are what we eat ate'...however organic cream and yogurt are listed as ok (also casein A2 - which is the only form of acceptable cows milk is only mentioned for 'milk' in the acceptable list - not cream and yogurt?). We are given great detail of why 'all meat' including grass fed is bad and causes cancer - and yet we can eat it (the author does not eat it). On one page we are told not to eat saturated fat but coconut oil and butter are listed as fine else where. Under ripe fruit is particularly bad but we are told to eat green bananas and green mangoes. The stated macronutrients are the same to keto being around 70% fat, 10% carbs and 20% protein. I have been eating a keto diet for the last year and so I was pleased to see that both diets are basically on the same track. Further changes that I have now made are no tomatoes, aubergine, zucchini, cucumber, peanuts. Only eat cheese and yogurt from Southern European cows. Have added in some sweet potato which isn't keto but good for gut bacteria (plus I have missed them!)...Have added a couple of supplements. The bottom line is that this is not an exact science by any means - the research is on going but if you at least get rid of the main culprits from your diet I'm sure it will make a huge difference.

PLANT PARADOX ENLIGHTENING INFORMATION REVEALS OTHER 'DIETARY HEALTH' REGIMES TO BE INEFFECTIVE
This most informative book is well presented in small sections that are are easy to read as well as understand as Dr Gundry explains everything so clearly, step by step. It is essential reading for whoever wants to improve their health, whether on a gluten free regime (which is also loaded with the dreaded inflammatory lectins) , is overweight, has inflammation of the gut, other very serious health issues, or whatever. Dr Gundry gives you the science as to why certain issues prevail not only in humans but in cattle too, and has found over years of his research that if you eat the flesh of cattle that have been fattened on lectin containing feed, these inflammatory proteins that cannot be dissolved, will affect your gut too. It is a most enlightening book and can be picked up as and when the urge for more information needs to be satisfied. ALL of my large collection of supposedly health promoting dietary advice books are now in the recycling bin as nothing else can touch this insightful advice. The 3 stages of this dietary program as well as the detailed delicious easy to prepare recipes are most helpful as a pathway to health.. Some of the recommended US foods are not readily available other than in Health Food shops or via Amazon, but they ARE available. And, other supermarkets with FREE FROM isles could be encouraged to stock them. Dr Gundry's recipes are easy to follow and are delightfully tasty.

So glad the message is getting out there that fat is good and grains are bad!
I have only just ordered this for my Kindle and am very much looking forward to reading it all. I read most of the preview already for the hardback version. I am 100% certain that our government guidelines have helped to make us all sick and what is worse I think they know this but will not make the necessary changes. Following on from us copying the US who went along with the 'findings' of the Ancel Keys 7 Countries Report (despite the fact that he had begun the study with 22 countries that were not used to 'prove' his point that saturated fat led to heart disease), back in the '70's, none of the findings since then have been considered! So today most doctors and most of the general public are convinced that we should be eating a low fat diet with 'healthy whole grains' representing the largest part of our plates! When in fact we should be eating a high fat and low carb diet if we want to be healthy. I have watched quite a few of Steven Gundry's videos and am very glad that he has put this book out there. The more that become educated the better. Last year I allowed wheat to creep into my diet now and then along with sugar, having been on a strictly LCHF diet for the two years previously. The result was that I gained weight, my hypertension returned with my BP being 214/144 on Feb 15th, and I felt tired all the time and very irritable and my IBS also returned. Just since Feb 15th, being back on the LCHF way of eating, although not totally ketogenic, and with two 36 hr water only fasts a week, I have lost over two stone, my BP is now 126/94, I have way more energy, am sleeping better and enjoying life so much more with no more depression and with a general feeling of well being. AND my food tastes better! I'm loving my food so much and enjoying trying out new recipes all the time and also loving my fast days twice a week, as I have more time on my hands to get things done. We are all different and have to find the best way to fit healthy eating into our lives and then we need to experiment on ourselves to get the tweaks just right for us. I am glad Gundry hasn't ruled out cheese and eggs as I don't want to give those up but after the 6 months mark in August I will undergo an elimination diet removing all dairy and eggs for 6 to 8 weeks and then re-introducing them one by one, just to be sure I'm okay with them. I'm now looking into getting more fermented foods in to heal the gut and will be experimenting with kefir, kombucha and kimchi along with my apple cider vinegar water that I take each day. It really is a try it and see sort of thing for us all to get it right for ourselves. But my heart goes out to those who use will power to stick to a low fat diet with lots of grains, believing that it is healthy. I would recommend this book to anyone who cares about their health and especially if they believe that low fat is good. Read and then do your own research and then enjoy a truly healthy diet that doesn't involve an ounce of will power because with all that fat things taste so wonderful! My saffron roast potatoes (which I don't eat too often) roasted in goose fat with a cheese sauce made from just cream and cheese and no flour to thicken it and a lovely gravy, which I hadn't put on when I took that photo, thickened by reducing it - is a healthy meal :-) As is the Creole Salad with a whole avocado, a fair bit of bacon and a dressing made with plenty of healthy oils, I used olive oil and linseed oil for that one and apple cider vinegar, along with other healthy ingredients such as garlic. Both meals were completely organic and taste great and with no guilt needed at all :-) Have to say, I'm intrigued to find out why he suggests that we cut out tomatoes and peppers! I love those so hope I don't need to cut them out but will add them to my elimination weeks if I feel he has some sound reasoning for it. I wish everyone the joy of eating truly healthy food.

Partly enjoyable!
A bit confusing book. I thoroughly enjoy the first part where you learn so much information about plant toxins, lectins, etcโฆ and how it is harmful to your body. The second part is confusing as it highly leans on the plant based diet.

Impressive results
Excellent book that promotes a diet that works. I have suffered from acid reflux for many years. I went gluten free a few years ago but still suffered from reflux and bloating. Within three days of starting the plant paradox diet my acid reflux disappeared and three months on I haven't had a single episode of it (I remain on the diet). Also of note is the fact that a persistent pain in my shoulder joints which I had endured for over a year also vanished within days. If you have similar problems I thoroughly recommend giving this a go. Yes, you have to make sacrifices and give up plenty of things you enjoyed eating but for me the improvement in my health is worth it. Once you get used to it you don't miss things much and in fact you will look at what other's are eating (lectin packed food) and feel sorry for them!!

Must read to healthy eating: paradigm shift in our dietary habits & familial dietary misgivings.
A well thought thro book. Bit wordy and self praising but once this wordy noise is removed the content is good. This is especially about the format and removal of many misconceptions that we carry about our dietary habits.

If you are sick, then it's worth the try
One can always find grounds for criticism, and that appears to be the case with this book. Critics say his citations are inaccurate, there's no evidence of peer review, marketing of supplements proves a lack of credibility, anecdotal passages indicate a flawed analysis, the understanding of lectins in the book is incomplete, etc. As a person who has suffered from psoriasis for the past 15 years, I say who cares if it works! I've tried going vegetarian, vegan, no carbs, gluten free, Chinese medicinal herbs, intermittent fasting, and just about every topical application including tar. Nothing worked or even helped in the least. Just two weeks on Dr. Gundry's diet and my psoriasis is showing improvement. I'm definitely not cured, but for the first time I actually see improvement and people notice it. Also, the diet is unfolding just as Dr. Gundry describes. After a while, I started craving the good vegetables, and my hunger is satisfied after eating a salad, and I don't get hungry again for hours. The thought of eating industrial farm raised animal protein is almost nauseating. But sometimes I go off the diet. Once day I ate pizza, and felt bloated and gained two pounds in one day. After going back on the diet both extra pounds were dropped in a couple days. Another day I ate industrial farm raised beef, and the indigestion was very unpleasant, resulting in gaining one pound overnight and my psoriasis became inflamed. Dr, Gundry does not hide the fact that his diet is the result of trial and error based upon his patients who he calls "canaries". His book is full of theories and historical observations, but it is obvious that it is all theoretical and not proven using scientific process. This makes the book interesting and helps tell a story and offers possible answers to why certain foods are bad and why certain foods are good. But the heart of the book is his lists of foods to eat and foods to avoid. Take to heart his advice to minimize animal proteins as much as possible. For me, I have never felt better than when I'm on his diet, and that is what counts. update 2/15/18 - After one month on Dr. Gundry's diet, I took my blood test. All my numbers were good. Prior to the diet, I was pre-diabetic and with high cholesterol. Also, the weight loss continues without effort. The psoriasis is still present, but the patches are slowly clearing. Do yourselves a favor and start eliminating lectins from your diet. update 3/7/18 - This diet continues to work. My psoriasis continues to clear. I can see improvement every week. My weight is still decreasing, about one pound every two weeks. There is no craving to go off diet, so it is easy to enjoy the foods that are recommended. By far the most difficulty with this diet is dealing with a social life. Eating in restaurants is always hazardous, as is dealing with friends and family who give foods as gifts. But the results don't lie, so it's all worth the effort. update 10/10/18 - My psoriasis is slowly clearing, mostly around my torso. My weight is stable around 165 pounds. The same amount I weighed in high school over thirty years ago. I stay on diet but I eat as much as I can until I'm very full, but weight never fluctuates. I'll be taking my blood test again in January and will report back. update 1/24/19 - Psoriasis continues to slowly get better. I would guess that about 20% of my plaque psoriasis has cleared up. My weight is stable at 165. I have been allowing myself to eat more farm raised meat, but I stick to what I consider the core of the diet - no grains, no night shade, no legumes, and no dairy. Here's another observation of this diet - you need to be ready to go alone on this diet. 100% of all people I've spoken with reject this diet. They cannot believe that tomatoes, cucumbers, tofu, whole wheat bread and many others are bad for you. Either that or they don't care. After a while, you just stop talking about the diet and I avoid answering questions like "why are you so thin?" Just do it for yourself and forget about what everybody says. update 2/19/19 - I should have mentioned the use of supplements to help block lectins. Dr. Gundry sell his "Lectin Shield" which you take when you can't avoid eating lectins. But you can buy supplements that are in his Lectin Shield that do the same thing for less money. So when I do go off diet, I take glucosamine, D-Mannose, okra, bladderwrack and larch arabinogalactans. These supplements help with digesting lectins so they don't get into the bloodstream.
