I received this beautiful compass as a gift, but the needle is lying loose inside the glass (not attached to the center). Is this defective?

can this be mounted on the dash of a automobile and will it record accurately?

It is a working compass; however, if the dash is sloped or uneven, it would mar the accuracy of the directional indication.  For the most part, the compass is designed as a decorative piece to be displayed; this is why is comes with a display stand.  Also, the majority of compasses design to work in the field are built of unbreakable plastic; our compass, however, is made of brass, with an artistic glass face that can break if dropped.

Can this be carried? Or is it just for display?

Yes, it can be carried, but unlike most compasses made today with a hard, plastic cover, our compass cover is made of glass that can break.  It works just like any other compass.  Having said this, I would suggest that you use it as a display primarily.  I hope this helps.

Is the compass set to true north or magnetic north?  what about declination?

Since the direction of the magnetic fields changes a little bit over time, or from one’s location in a hemisphere, all compasses, as well as ours, point to magnetic north.  And the magnetic declination changes depending on where you are standing in the US with our compass, as well.  That being said, our compass is designed to work as an inspirational work of art that is to be displayed on a desktop or shelf. Also, because the face is made of glass, our compass could easily break during a rugged hike in the woods—although it would work like any other compass.  I hope this helps.
