Yes. The lever will open wide enough to allow animal crackers to pass without being crushed.

Can it handle larger cereals, such as frosted wheat flakes? Is it easy for kids to use without causing a mess?

Any size flakes. The first time you use it you will probably let too much out at once. Just use a light touch until you learn.

There is a nice seal around the lid and if the lid is on tight it's probably air tight. It keeps my cereal fresh until used.
