The Vermiculite is recyclable, the bag isn't

Have prices shot up? bought a bag of vermiculite med 100 ltr bag (a245) at £29.69 two weeks ago and want a second, but now the price says £36.62?

Yes prices up again. Brexit no doubt! You will not get 100l of vermiculite for £20 but could get perlite for that! That is better for mixing for root growth but vermiculite is better for retaining water and for a seed cover when sowing in pots.

Is there a risk of asbestos?

There was a risk upto the 1980s as Vermiculite used to be mined in areas that could contain Asbestos contaminants. However those contaminated sources of Vermiculite were closed in the 1980s following the discovery of asbestos fibers in vermiculite. Modern forms of vermiculite are unlikely to contain asbestos, due to updated mining and manufacturing techniques plus checks carried out by various health agencies. It thus poses less of a risk since the 1980s especially to those using potting mixtures. However it's advisable to wear a mask and protective glasses when mixing any products which can contain dust particles, such as with Vermiculite, also Perlite too. Be particularly wary of dust in enclosed spaces.

Good quality vermiculite

Excellent quality and size of grain. The plastic sack is reasonably robust and arrives packed in a paper sack for additional protection. If you use a lot of vermiculite and you normally buy the 10 litre bags from the garden centres, this is just as good and much cheaper per litre, provided you have somewhere to store it.

Buy in bulk it will last

A very large amount of vermiculite it will last me for ages and keeps for a long time so if you do gardening this is very good value for money. It comes in useful to mix with compost to improve the soil and stop it drying out in plant pots and to break up clay soil.
