Eat to starve lymphedema and lipedema by having foods that fight these conditions (and cancer) and avoiding foods that contribute to symptoms or related conditions. Learn how food choices affect both conditions and how better nutrition can improve symptoms (including pain) and delay changes associated with progression to more advanced stages. Intended for anyone with, or at risk for, lymphedema or lipedema, caregivers, lymphedema therapists, and other health care providers. Signs of lymphedema and lipedema (painful fat syndrome) include swelling (edema), abnormal fat accumulation, pain, skin changes, and infections (cellulitis, wounds or ulcers) in affected areas. Lymphedema and lipedema are progressive conditions that can be depressing, disfiguring, disabling, and (potentially) deadly, without treatment. This guide explains why nutrition is an essential part of treatment and self-care for these conditions, what to eat, and how to change your eating pattern. It also covers vitamins, minerals, and supplements that may be beneficial. You may be at risk for lymphedema if you have chronic venous insufficiency, other venous disorders, heart disease, obesity, a cancer diagnosis (especially breast cancer, reproductive system cancers, or melanoma), or a family history of lymphedema or swollen legs. Eating wisely and maintaining a healthy body weight can help reduce your risk of developing lymphedema symptoms. This guide includes all the information you need for changing your eating pattern including ways to increase your motivation and build support for changing your eating pattern, meal plans and recipes for recommended foods, a shopping guide, cooking tips, suggestions for eating away from home, and much more. It also includes detailed information on lymphedema and lipedema including risk factors, signs and symptoms, treatment, other health care considerations and over 40 photos showing different stages of each condition. The authors include experts in lymphedema and lipedema treatment, nutrition research, and behavior change. Recommendations are based on published medical research combined with the clinical experience of the authors. In addition to sharing their clinical experience, Emily Iker and Linda-Anne Kahn share their personal insights from living well with lymphedema and lipedema, respectively. Chuck Ehrlich is a medical researcher and writer for LymphNotes.com, as well as a lymphedema caregiver. Emily Iker, MD, specializes in treating lymphedema and lipedema at the Lymphedema Center in Santa Monica and has lower-extremity lymphedema. Karen Louise Herbst, PhD, MD, treats people with lymphatic issues including lymphedema and lipedema, and leads the Treatment, Research and Education of Adipose Tissue (TREAT) Program, at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. Linda-Anne Kahn, CMT, NCTMB, CLT-LANA, CCN, is a lymphedema therapist, nutritional consultant and integrative health coach at Beauty Kliniek Day Spa and Wellness Center in San Diego, and has lipedema. Dorothy D. Sears, PhD, researches diet and behavior patterns for reducing disease risk at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine. Mandy Kenyon, MS, RD, CSSD, is a consulting dietitian and research leader for Salk Institute and Veteran’s Medical Research Foundation. Elizabeth McMahon, PhD, is a clinical psychologist specializing in health-related behavior change and the author of several lymphedema books including Overcoming the Emotional Challenges of Lymphedema . Foreword by Felicitie Daftuar, founder and executive director of Lipedema Foundation and past-president of the Fat Disorders Research Society. Review: Excellent - I’m a care worker but bought this for myself. It is a ‘ heavy ‘ book to read as it is quite medical and sometimes a little hard to understand. But it is an amazing book, very informative and very interesting. Give this book a go. Stick with it and take your time reading and understanding the book. Excellent. Review: Information is outstanding. - Wow ! Only had the book for a few days. Information is outstanding. Got a lot of reading to do. But so far I'm very impressed with the book. I was told my thighs was just fat by my doctor last year. But you know your own body. When I get enough information. I will be back to see my doctor when I can ( virus is not allowing me to go). To see what help i can get.

not a quick read - very detail heavy
I have lipoedema and I need this book but it's going to take a few readings to glean the most helpful information because there is just so much to take in. A lot of detail is provided about the physiology/nutrition side and, even though I have a science background, I found it hard going. Perhaps the best approach is to read this slowly, make notes, and come up with your own plan? But I guess I just wanted 'the answers' without too much effort on my part. I didn't find the sample meal plans helpful (a lot of salads and soups, eggs and fish) but then I have other dietary restrictions (vegan) and I appreciate there's never a one-size-fits-all. In summary, it's worth getting but be prepared to do the work of interpreting it in light of your own, individual condition, preferences, and resources. I think trial and error is needed to figure out the right diet for you (but I appreciate, when facing a progressive condition, there's a wish just to know the best answer straight away). The book does include suggestions for *how* to make the dietary changes as well (including food diary, meditation, dealing with saboteurs) so that's an added bonus!

Informative and hopeful
Having self diagnosed and now waiting to have it confirmed, it's been great to get information that at least makes one feel hopeful of a positive out come, and the chance to have some control over things. Informative, with medical info to back it up. Feeling less helpless.

Too much science
I am finding this book very hard to read, with toon much science and not enough emphasis on communication skill. I get the feeling it was dictated and not proof read before publishing. Just because it is the only book of its kind, does not mean that everyone who reads it will understand it. I am a graduate of English and it’s a tough read. I’m glad they produced lists of foods to eat and not to eat: those I can understand, but I would like to be able to understand it all! A list of recommended supplements would have been good too. There’s so much a book on lipadema could say, and hopefully they will improve this book on future editions.

There are a few books on Lymphedema but this is ...
There are a few books on Lymphedema but this is THE book to read on Lipedema if you have the condition. It isn't just a nutrition guide it explains all those symptoms you have struggled with, that have been misdiagnosed all your life. The RAD diet, from my personal experience, seems to be helping reduce inflamation. Early days, but I am hopeful.

Fascinating Book
I am just over half way through the book. It goes further than just promoting an anti-inflammatory diet. It also discusses why some foods are beneficial specifically to lipedema and lyphadema. It gets into the science, but in an easy way, plus practical ways to implement. Simple ideas to get diet started with some good general meal plans and recipes. It's very well done. It also goes into specific nutrients and supplements. I started developing pea sized lumps under my thighs during a 2 year low level carbon monoxide poisoning. The CO left me with numerous other health issues including chronic fatigue. I used a diet (SCD) and other interventions to heal. When I did finally have the energy to exercise my legs would tone up. Then I was able to expand my diet in the last 1.5 years but at the same time my legs completely changed, and no longer respond to exercise. They have taken on a life of their own. And the lumps and fat actually hurt. After being told for years they were benign and nothing to worry about, I finally discovered lipedema in google. Finally an explanation. I'm waiting for an appointment for a dx but want to start right away on getting this under control. Looks like I'll be getting back to full time SCD diet but will make sure I include some of the foods and ideas in this book.

excellent resource even for those undiagnosed
I saw a YouTube video with Chuck Ehrlich and purchased this as a result. Haven’t been diagnosed but experience symptoms-the nutrition guide is perfect for anyone looking for answers and moving away from a high carbohydrate western lifestyle.
