The first stroke-by-stroke guide ever produced for learning to write Naskh, one of the six major cursive Arabic scripts. Its origins can be traced back to the late eighth century AD and it is still in use today, over 1300 years later. The Ottoman Turks considered Naskh the script most suited for copying the Qur'an and today more Qur'ans are copied in Naskh throughout the Islamic world than in all other Arabic scripts combined. This introductory workbook makes it possible for everyone to learn and enjoy the beauty of Arabic calligraphy. Based on his experience of running workshops and demonstrations at The British Museum and other cultural institutions around the UK, Mustafa Ja'far has created an easy-to-follow, teach-yourself guide.

Arabic Calligraphy in its simplicity
This is a very good and beautiful book to introduce Arabic Calligraphy to the masses. Each letter is a piece of art. Each letter has a message and structure which can be easily and logically understood, but never copied.

Very good Arabic calligraphy product
This was a very good product and helped me and my kids understand what Arabic calligraphy is and how it works. We are a fan of calligraphy, and when we found this product, we were very interested. It came in perfect packaging, and the book gave us in-depth knowledge about Arabic letters and the dimensions of how large or small they should be, as well as the strokes of the pen while writing the letter. In the end we learnt a lot, and I think this was a great product. Definitely recommend!

good for beginners
im a beginner in arabic script. this book provides a good introduction to letter proprtions and shapes in the stand-alone letters section. however the comined-letters section is not as useful due to the vast number of permutations, but shows some lovely words which can be copied for practice. i recommend for beginners like me.

brilliant
brilliant I have bought another book admittedly on a different style of arabic calligraphy, never the less this book has taught me a lot. Very simple yet very useful.

Clear, helpful
Excellent guide, very clear. The only thing I wish were included is practice on the smaller versions of the letters (the ones that go inside the word) since the book deals only with unattached/large letters (that go independently or at the end). Nice practice sheets at the end.

Excellent book for beginners
I am a beginner in calligraphy, this book is very useful as it tells you how to make the strokes and all. I would love it if there are more variety of scripts book like this for beginners. This book is useful for those who know the Arabic script, can read and write despite not speaking or knowing the meaning of the Arabic text you've read (common with those who read the Holy Quran in arabic but with translation of course in their respective languages). Amazing book. I really found it useful. Loved it!

Not impressed.
It's a little short on advice - good on how to do individual letters but lacking on joining words etc. Not a beginner guide I expected - it is quite brief.

A fruitful and useful introduction to the Naskh style
The book is an excellent guide in English language to get started with the first approach to Arabic Calligraphy. It was produced in 2002 by the British Museum of London but is still current. Although it offers a limited series of themes related to Arabic calligraphy, it only introduces the Naskh style, which is the most widespread calligraphic style in the world. Being a museum guide, it deals only with technical issues and can be considered a good source of introductory tutorials. In 30 pages he manages to give a fairly effective vision of what Naskh style means in Arabic calligraphy. Read with interest..
