Walabot DIY 2 – Visual Stud Finder & Wall Scanner for Drywall. Detects Wood & Metal Studs, Plastic & Metal Pipes, Live & Non-Live Wires

What an excellent and usefull Home DIY Tool !! I have tried various "typical" Stud-Finder tools in the past and always had mediocre experiences with them being mostly inaccurate. I remeber when this device 1st came out and it caught my interest, but I did not have a need for it at the time. Recently My wife wanted me to hang some floating shelves near the fireplace. I KNEW I had to get into the Studs directly for a good, sturdy floating shelf that won't SAG over time. This tool allowed me to FLAWLESSLY mount all my shelves without a single missed Stud. So cool !! As a tech guy I understand why it requires calibration, and since it has an App I feel that the user experience can be greatly enhanced !. Each time you take it to the wall you need to do a simple calibration so it learns the surface. It's a big aggrevating when on a ladder and having to use the phone as a view screen, to have to re-calibrate each time it goes back to the same wall. It would be amazing if the App could be updated with a Button to tell the tihng that you are still on the same wall and no need to re-cal. Would be great if you could save wall cal data to like 4 zones, so when doing a full room, you can do initial cal on each wall, then save as wall-1, wall-2, wall-3 wall-4 that way when making repeaded measurements & double checking it would save tremendous amount of time. I fealt pretty dorky in front of my wife, trying to show off my new cool tool when she laughed at me each time I had to re-cal the device. All in all I am glad to have this in my tool kit and I'm sure will get lots more use over the years. Cool product.

If you are a homeowner, this tool is a must. I spent a lot of time trying to find the center of a stud in my ceiling with a Zircon. I've used the Zircon many times with success, but it wasn't happening this time - finding the center of the stud this time was painful with unreliable results. I wound up drilling where I thought was a stud, only to run into a goose egg. I purchased the Walabot and had a visual center of the stud in 30 seconds. The price stinks, but as most times in life, you get what you pay for. I'll end the boring story and give my pros and cons. Pros: 1. Visual representation of what's in the wall 2. This newer unit connects via WI-FI 3. Reliable results in seconds Cons: 1. You have to calibrate by making large circles in the area. If you are a perfectionist like me, it stinks because of the paint sometimes getting scratched or rubbed off. All stud finders do this, but this has the potential to happen in an area that might not get covered. To have to do this on a new wall would be tough. 2. Can't easily tell between a pipe and a wire (still better than what's out there) 3. Having to have to use the stud finder with a phone can turn this into a two person job many times 4. There is maintenance for this unit. You can't let the battery deplete because there is a chance that it may not charge again. I've heard of overcharging, but not the reverse. I will have to set a reminder to charge at regular intervals. 5. The directions say that you have to charge with the cable provided, but don't provide a charger. This is weird and I don't get that - one more thing to have to remember. Make no mistake, there are more cons than pro's, but it wouldn't even come close to stop me from buying this thing. The device is worth every penny.

Mine works pretty well through drywall with just a small layer of “stucco”. The stucco type where a trowel smoothes out a thin coating on regular drywall. 1/32 inch thick or thinner. Just keep it in contact and slowly move so as not to jump away from the wall. This is NOT the heavy coat seen on textured ceilings from years ago. Easy to connect to my iPhone and probably set up in less than a minute. The fact have to recalibrate every now and then is zero problem to me! The “video” on the iPhone screen much better than the cheaper stud finders where kind of hit and miss if you are over a wooden stud turned sideways (2 inches) and need to hit close to center so as not to just catch the edge of the stud. I used it putting up shelving and using a quarter inch 1 1/2 inch long lag screw hit dead center best can tell by the way the lag screw goes in. Used my DeWalt impact driver so know am staying in center when it starts getting close to full depth. But this… you will NOT be sorry at least when going into wood studs from the 2 inch side through sheetrock.

This thing is VERY cool. Was hanging a big TV on the wall and wanted to be very sure I drilled near the middle of the studs. Read some reviews, and bought the DIY 2. I'd already marked the wall with my old stud finder. The Walabot showed me an electrical wire and the center of the studs. My old marks were up to 1/2" off. REALLY glad I know the TV mount is in the solid parts of the studs. Now need to mount a shadow box. Not heavy, but electrical outlet below. Good to know I can be sure to avoid the wires. Thanks!

The World's Most Expensive Grab Bar: A True Story of the Walabot I own a home accessibility and mobility business in Western PA called Safe Havens. Part of my regular services include grab bars for fall protection, predominantly in clients' bathrooms. Securing these to studs is the safest and most secure option when possible. To help find those studs I was in search of something better than an off the shelf stud finder, or something that could easily be procured at your big box home improvement store. After what many of us do, browsing the internet and watching YouTube, the Walabot seemed to be a prominent recommendation from many sites and posts. For me, being able to see not only studs but piping and electrical was influential in my purchase. Did I think it was "Superman Vision" or "X-Ray" for your walls like so many claimed? Not really. As a tool to help me make more confident decisions on finding studs and other hazards behind walls, yes, I was hoping so. After receiving the Walabot, and being someone who is vigilant about reading the instructions and watching many videos, I started to test it around my house. In areas where I could have access behind walls and in places where I knew what was hidden, it seemed reasonably accurate, finding wiring and some piping. I felt reasonably assured that I could take it to my first job since purchasing it, which was a grab bar installation in a tub/shower area. I followed all the procedures, calibration, and scanned the wall many times to verify what it was showing. Found the stud and stud center I wanted to attach the bar to, and then went about securing the bar to the shower wall like I have done before. That was two weeks ago. I was happy, the client was happy, and I went about my business as usual, until yesterday. I get a call from the homeowner saying there was water leaking into the kitchen, which was on the other side of the bathroom. She said her handyman told her I hit a pipe installing the grab bar. For context, this was a small basement apartment in an older house. I said I would come over as soon as possible to investigate. I was not really sure what could be leaking. I ran through the whole scenario of installing it and thought there was no way I hit wood stud, felt the screw grab, I was good. I felt that maybe this was an unrelated issue. I get to the home and there is an extensive leak behind the kitchen wall near the sink, and the drywall and wainscoting were buckling from the degree of water infiltration. Again, not believing that I hit a pipe, I cut a small hole in the wall and looked down, only to see water spraying from a pipe running through the stud I had secured the grab bar to. A gut punch. A one in a million shot and I nailed it. Not once did the "X-Ray vision" of the Walabot reveal that there was a pretty extensive system of copper water supply pipe in the wall right next to that stud. Naturally I needed to get the water leak fixed, so I called an emergency plumber who would come out as soon as possible on a Saturday, who did arrive an hour later and billed me $600 to fix the leak. Combined with the week it will take me to rebuild the area and my costs associated with that, I have now installed the world's most expensive grab bar. Now, I have been doing this for a while, but this is a new business for me and I took this one hard on the chin. I will do whatever is necessary at my own expense to fix this, and the owner and tenant have been more than kind and even acknowledged that this was a freak accident more than anything. Now, am I solely blaming the Walabot for this incident? I am not. I am however calling out their ridiculous claims. As anyone who performs work knows, you can always do more due diligence. However, investing in what is a somewhat expensive tool to help you do your due diligence and make more informed work decisions was all I was expecting for my return on investment. It did not deliver, and I want to inform all of you of that. At bare minimum, their claims should have held up enough to reveal the pipes in that location, since they were an inch or less in depth from the wall I was securing the bar to. I only convey this story so that anyone who may be on the fence about purchasing one, does not. It is a gimmick, a toy, not a professional device. Walabot, dial back your claims and your campaigns and be more truthful. Anyone who wants to challenge me on this, saying that I did not use it correctly, I am sorry, I followed the instructions to the letter after thorough review.

In love with this. A bit pricey compared to the basic stud finder but for someone who is constantly drilling into walls at work, this was worth the cost. Takes the guessing out of the scenario. Ive used it to mount large ikea mirrors on a wall into metal studs and recently used it to get a better idea of what was behind a wall before cutting a hole and framing a doorway. Puts me more at a peace of mind with the visuals then my old stud finder with the 3 laser lines on it. Its very easy to use. I do regret not getting the magnetic add on so that it can stick to my phone case.

First of all, this is absolutely a cool idea! And overall I like it. But it definitely could be better. First the good: The visual representation makes it a lot easier to find the center of a stud which is super nice! My other stud finder has a center mode too but seeing it just makes me feel better. Another pro is it finds wires! I didn't have luck with low voltage wires but it seems to find the high voltage ones well which is good! I haven't tried pipes yet. Now the bad: Physically, it definitely feels cheap, but whatever. What is annoying is the "feet" aren't really great for sliding on the wall. It doesn't help that mine are textured, but even on a smooth wall it wouldn't be great. Otherwise, the device itself is fine. The real issues are in the app. The app is really bad. It was hard to connect, it didn't reconnect the second time I used it although it has since. It has dropped connection once. You have to go through a whole process every time you start using it with several dialogs and prompts. It really should be after the first use that you can open the app, have it autocommect, and jump right into the calibration step. After that it should dump you immediately into whichever mode you used last. But instead it's overly complicated and annoying. As well, I mentioned it makes it easy to center on the stud, well here's what I didn't mention yet: There is no center line on the screen. At all. So you're expected to eyeball center which is annoying. However since the "calibrate" button is placed in your viewing window centered for some reason, I use that as a center mark. So cool, weird bad design accidentally makes up for other weird bad design. There is also no beep option like a traditional stud finder, which would be a nice option to have. (Although I do like it being quiet most of the time) Oh one other thing, it clearly doesn't like wood that isn't a stud. So if it's blocking for a cabinet for example, it's just gonna be very confused and show a stud, but then it won't move in the screen. The good news is, the vast majority of these issues could be fixed by making the app better. The bad news it, this product isn't new so that doesn't enstill confidence that they will. I think if the software were competent, this would be worth the asking price. As is, it's definitely on the pricey side. Would I recommend it? Maybe. IDK. I do like it. But it's also a little frustrating to use.

Was a little sceptical about this being able to do other substrates….my personal experience with this device leads me to believe that it is more suited to plasterboard walling and some wood panelling. I needed this to work for me on plasterboard and I got some convincing results. The setup/calibrating was easy and the downloadable App connected without fuss .
