A must have for internet security!
Our Aircove works flawlessly in our 2,600-square-foot home. It handles everything we throw at it—smart TV, smart DVD player (yes, we’re old school), multiple iPhones, iPads, laptops, and numerous IoT devices—all connected over Wi-Fi without issue. The interface is easy to access through a web browser or the iPhone app, and we can assign different VPN endpoints to individual devices as needed—even connecting to multiple countries at the same time. All traffic is encrypted through the VPN tunnel, which prevents our ISP from monitoring our browsing activity. ExpressVPN updates automatically, so there’s nothing to manage or worry about. The only cable connected is the line from our ISP. We can choose between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, with both main and guest networks available. Speeds are more than adequate, and the range is excellent—I can even connect from my neighbor’s house. The unit itself is compact and unobtrusive, fitting almost anywhere out of sight.

ExpressVPN Aircove router in-depth review
My initial two months of using the Aircove router from ExpressVPN have been very positive, and I recommend it as a general-purpose secure router that is extremely simple to set up. Jumping on the introductory discount of the ExpressVPN Aircove was a snap decision as a continuing expressVPN subscriber. It fit all the requirements I has for an internal home router. I already had a two-year-old WiFi5/WPA2 mesh router which provides adequate coverage in my 1300 sq-ft split-level home without requiring any satellite routers, but I wanted to move to WPA3 security for my devices that support it and VPN coverage for devices that that couldn't run expressVPN. 1. Security Now that all of our phones and laptops support WPA3, it was time to move to make the painless upgrade to our WIFI security. I routinely noted unknown devices probing my WiFi5/WPA2 router and figured that a concerted attack was just a matter of time. I continue to use that router as my edge router for untrusted devices that I own such as smart TVs and smart home switches used for trivial functions like outdoor holiday lighting. Since most of these devices are confined to the GUEST network, penetration of any one of them is of little concern. 2. Convenience I found the Aircove's setup to be the easiest I've ever encountered after several decades of using routers from industry leaders. It was literally a 5-minute process. An even bigger convenience factor is that the expressVPN software running on the router eliminates the frequent task of downloading and installing expressVPN updates to stay-at-home devices. I have yet to verify that the expressVPN in the router auto-updates, but even if that claim is not met, updating it manually is still a great time saver over updating my many devices with several different Operating Systems. Performance As a non-gamer, I do not choose to pay for 1Gb internet service. Still, I like getting the bandwidth that I'm paying for even while protecting my devices with a VPN. Having the router spend cycles doing the the encryption and decryption degrades latency vrs having no VPN but has little effect on throughput, and allows those CPU cycles to freed up on all my devices that no longer have to run the VPN to get that protection while in my home. Given all this, a serious gamer should have a high-performance gaming router as the edge router but may want to seriously consider the Aircove as an internal router for a non-gaming network of devices. Support Although this is expressVPN's first foray into selling routers, there is reason to expect better support for this product since most of it's users are paying $100/yr for the expressvpn subscription. Hardware Quality Although not a huge name in the home router market, the Chinese company that manufactures the hardware has a solid reputation for quality and support. Price At roughly half the price of comparatively powerful WiFi6/WPA3 routers that run ExpressVPN or anything of comparable quality, this purchase was a no-brainer. Features As I indicated before, the lack of GUEST network support is justified by the main goals of this router, but is alleviated when used as an internal router where an edge router supplies a GUEST network. The Aircove is also poor in the bells and whistles such as Parent Controls. Having no minor children in my home makes that a non-issue, besides, if I didn't trust my children, they would be confined to the edge router or even to it's GUEST network. There is no suite of security tools such as some companies provide on the premier routers, but I never found such to be very useful compared to just having a modicum of vigilance in reviewing your connection logs. The Aircove sports four ethernet ports in addition to the WAN port, which should be plenty in the WiFi-intensive world we live in. If not, unmanaged switches are very inexpensive. There is no USB port, which I also consider reasonable for an internal security router. If I want a low-security file-sharing device, it would make more sence to put it on the edge router. If you don't use an edge router or yours lacks a USB port, for $50 you can use something like PLEX on a RaspberryPI to flexibly share media on either your high security Aircove network or on the low security edge router network at the cost of tying up one ethernet port or buying a switch or via WiFi if you must waste wireless bandwidth in that fashion. A Roku Ultra can supply a subset of those features, as well. A minor plus feature is the four foldable antennae. This makes the Aircove a passable travel router. This works particularly well for me as it leaves the edge router behind with all the functionality that the dog/house sitter is permitted. Criticisms There is not much to say here. WiFi 6E or 7 will be nice when our devices start supporting it. Support for other emerging wireless smart home standards would be nice, as well. The Aircove is not a mesh hub, but I could attach additional Aircoves to satellites of my mesh edge router if needed. My biggest beef is that expressVPN running on my devices runs afoul of the expressVPN running on the Aircove. The ability to list devices by hardware MAC address that should be exempted from the VPN in the Aircove is a good feature but does not help with computers that are dual-bootable where one of the OSs is auto-launching expressvpn and another is not, perhaps because it is not available for that OS. Also, I'd like to see arbitration so that the device with the later version of expressVPN wins, or if they are the same that the device yields to the Aircove. Better yet, the arbitration policy could be configurable on a device-by-device basis with the default being as previously suggested. Finally, this is a criticism only in the positive sense: the Aircove seems to boot and come on line with the VPN active remarkably quickly: an indication of it's powerful processor and efficient software.

Not Reliable Service
It replaced my Apple Ariport Base which worked flawlessly for years. The Aircove is simple to setup and the interface to choose which devices to be bundled together or no VPN or cut of access to internet all together to some other devices works very easy. BUT from day one my internet connection became unreliable. Everything would be fine for a few days and then no internet--none whatsoever. At times changing the CPN protocol can help or changing the city server can help but at other time nothing helps. I am now back on my Apple router until I can figure out the reason why this last time the router stoped working. This last episode just happened and I was not even able to connect to the router to see whatswhat... This is very disappointing. This router has a good idea to have VPN and make it esy to protect yourself but evidently this product isn't ready for the market yet. Back to the drawing board folks... Also-I I tried to resolve my issue with ExpressVPN and the customer service was of no help at all . If you bvuy this device, use it at your own risk. If anything goes wrong, you are on your own!

Works great with just one big catch...
The set up was easy, basic configurations and controls work nicely for my needs, the connection is reliable and my xBox was more than happy to hook into it as well. I've got three Apple devices, two TVs and the one gaming console hooked up, and it was easy-peasy to get it all going. The catch is this, and it was one of the main reasons that I bought the unit to begin with so I suspect that the reason for a higher than normal rate of returns according to Amazon is this - it doesn't work with Roku. It works within all of my paid apps that I have on my Roku TV. I can still use Netflix, Hulu, Peacock, Paramount+ and YouTube Premium with the Aircove, but the Roku selections and Live TV options which were so very convenient and my primary access point for much of what I watch just lock up and do nothing. It's just me here in my home, so I've adjusted my viewing habits and am now using my laptop for much more of my viewing, but if you've got more than one person - like a wife and children - I'd say 'ugh' if your household likes the Roku offerings. Again, it seems to be a great product and provides me with the additional security and anonymity that I was looking for and functionally the Aircove is performing perfectly, but if you are looking to use it with Roku in any sort of meaningful way on your television, just be prepared to change your viewing habits, because it does not work in the same way with Roku. Again, all of my paid apps still work internally, but the Roku functions are obviously secured in a different way and will not start. Overall, for me, a good purchase and I'm not sending mine back because of the Roku issue as I have adjusted myself to work along with the unit and it works perfectly. But, as I've explained, and ExpressVPN should probably explain pretty clearly before purchase, it kinda sorta kills Roku functionality.

Why did I ever wait so long???
As a non-techie, the concept of a VPN had always remained a mystery... networks that are virtual? Please. How's that supposed to help me... much less, how would I ever have the time to get a degree in network administration so I could manage such a thing? With all the news about hacking and the more my online presence increased I realized I needed to bite the bullet and get smart. I was fortunate to get some guidance right out of the gate and learn about ExpressVPN. While it cost a little more than most other VPN providers, it was highly touted as insanely easy to install, configure, and use. As I honed in on the service, I made contact via their Live Chat and figured I would suffer through the "Live Chat Bot" cycle of questions and embarrass myself with a series of amateur questions that would make any online agent want to quit their job. Fortunately, I ran into Jesse (I believe that was the name). OMG. Incredibly patient, non-judgemental, answered all my questions without a moment of latency, and even offered insights I didn't realize I needed to have! At the end of our exchange, I had to ask if I was speaking with a bot. The response was "sorry, but I hate to disappoint you but I, along with all my other colleagues, are good ol' fashioned humans... happy to answer your questions 24/7!" Just. wow. This is the exact type of service I was going to need if I were going to take the virtual plunge. Not only did Jesse answer all my questions, but I was also given a link to ExpressVPN's Aircove Router... and not even with a hard sell. When I inquired more about the benefits, it became quite obvious that before I even signed up for an ExpressVPN subscription, I was going to have to order this thing. The idea of having the ExpressVPN software preloaded and configured was exactly what I needed. Even better was the idea that having the Aircove, coupled with the ExpressVPN subscription, I wouldn't have to flash the firmware or keep up with updates. For $200 bucks I could replace my existing 18-year-old router and quite likely get better coverage and performance. I ordered the Aircove at about 3:00 pm I think... it was sitting on my porch at 3:00 pm the next day! Thanks Prime! An hour later, I had a 1 year (+3month free) ExpressVPN subscription. The next morning I unplugged my old router, plugged in the Aircove thinking I would be in for a long interaction with Jesse at customer support again. The router light was on... and I thought surely this can't be that simple. I was right. After some light panic, I remembered I needed to log in with the IP Address conveniently printed on the bottom of the unit (along with a series of other important items like MAC Address and PW). The IP address in the browser was magic. Despite not having any access to the outside world, I was able to access the dashboard... and seeing that I had no connected devices and no internet, I restarted my machine. Boom. Something happened and I was suddenly connected to the outside world again. I was online and surfing the web within minutes (maybe 10?). After an hour or so of fiddling with the settings in the dashboard, reading the FAQs and Help... I installed the VPN on our iPhones and laptops. I've only had this VPN up and running for a few days, but man... simplicity at it's its finest. And you don't have to be a network administrator to make it go! Super impressed so far. I have 10 devices connected with 6 connected through my switch which only counts as 1 since it is attached to the aircove. I HIGHLY recommend everyone consider getting the router and the ExpressVPN service... especially for people like me who fear the "virtual" world. Just please, tell them I sent you!

Slight weirdness while setting up for my Xfinity modem but then great
I ordered this, along with an arris surfboard to go with my new Comcast Xfinity service that I was forced to switch to. The end story is that the router works great in my house. it is a 3 story old house with the router on the ground floor in the front of the house and it reaches the whole house. The software part of the setup was fantastically easy and the options of having the VPN in the router are so so nice. I am glad to have finally switched. The longer part of the story and the frustrating part was that I had some issues in getting it to pair with my router/ISP though in the end I am not sure why it was a headache. My modem and the Xfinity wifi set up fine. I knew I had service at the modem. I was able to plug in the router and run the setup software with almost zero effort. You plug it in, scan the code on the bottom with your phone, then run the setup via a website link that guides you through resetting passwords and setting all the options. Setting up the VPN is easy with each device joining into a default group. You then easily make different groups of VPN or not and drag and drop the devices to each group as you like. What was not working was that when I plugged the internet from my model to the router it still showed no internet signal. I was able to take this counter and plug it into my previous ISP LAN port and it worked just fine so I knew it was either Xfinity or my new surfboard modem. Repeated and rebooted many times with no difference. Changes the VPN options thinking this is what might be doing it but that makes no sense and in the end it didn't matter. I read a question on here about similar setup issues where the gentleman said he got it to work by taking a passthrough switch and sticking it between his modem and the router to fix it. I did not have a switch but I had an old router. So I took my old router and plugged it into Xfinity and the modem and that worked fine. I then took this new air cove and plugged its wan into the old wifi router and then I got the router to connect out through the chain. So that confused me but confirmed that all hardware was good and it wasn't an Xfinity black hole of non function. I then removed the old router from the chain and it kept working. So Xfinity to Arris Surfboard to Aircove functions exactly as programmed after getting the router to get recognized. The router itself and its software is great. I don't understand this process of getting the router to be recognized or which piece of equipment was the problem. But in the end, following the amazon questions and answers on here I got it going and am satisfied with it now

Hardware is ok but tied to one VPN service which is often blocked by sites and streaming platforms.
This is an OK vpn router. The router itself works fine but the reason you'd buy an Aircove is to use it with Express VPN. If not for Express VPN there are plenty of other routers out there that provide you with a lot more flexibility and just as much or more security, reporting and granularity about what is going on in your local network. As a VPN service, express VPN is ok. It isn't great nor subrate, just OK. It is easy to setup and you can decide which connected devices run through the VPN and which do not. This is where the just OK part comes in: If you have a TV or device using ROKU this VPN will likely not work. While you'll be able to for example use a ROKU dongle and watch some content, many options will detect the VPN and simply tell you to stop using the VPN. Sometimes you can stop the channel/app and go at it again and get through but that is a temporary fix. If that fix always worked it would just be a nuisance but it's just temporary until the channel will freeze up, you exit and upon choosing it again are told to stop using the VPN. The permanent fix is to isolate that device from the VPN which is a simple click in the ADMIN part of the router's firmware but then you don't have the VPN protection anymore so what is the point? More to that point is that many channels and services recognize Express VPN and prevent access. Very common portals like Lowes and Home Depot will block Express VPN, maddening when you are trying to get something or even just look up things for information. The number of portals denying access to Express VPN are nearly as many as allow it or so it seems. Letts devices through the router with no VPN defeats the entire purpose of having the VPN and when you allow one device through, over time, very sophisticated systems are collecting and linking information to the unprotected IP and then linking back to other devices using the VPN. While that is a broad net they do it and so while you are somewhat protected it isn't as much as you think. For the cost of the VPN router the value isn't that good because now you are sort of captured to use Express VPN. Other VPN routers let you use any VPN that is compatible but this way you are tied to Express VPN and if it doesn't work for you then you end up buying another router. To be fair, when the VPN does work and isn't denied access it works as you'd expect. If you want a really touch free VPN then there are better solutions. If express VPN works for you then it can be a nice way to use it and with the easy configuration, rather painless. For me, I don't want to be a network admin always troubleshooting why some site can't be reached and then choosing a different server, especially for family members. I don't need another job. While the hardware works well, recently it started to act up as in not working at all. It shows power and a hard reboot (power off, wait...........power on restores function that is just another problem. This can happen at any time, the connection just stops working and it's another stop, fix and go on affair. I have some old wifi routers going on 15 years that work and have not once failed to work. While their security and other protocols are very dated, the fact is they still work. This one is barely over a year old and I can't say it is reliable. It's ok for some routine use but if I needed to depend on it for a remote work situation (work from home) it would not be my choice. It all comes down to if Express VPN will allow consistent access to the sites, portals and streaming platforms you use. You'll have to try it to find out. If you do get this VPN router, just be aware it's ties to Express VPN and before the return period is up, do some heavy using and really test all your devices, sites, streaming platforms to make sure you won't end up having to switch servers or find yourself being blocked.

Perfect for Getting America Overseas
I recently moved overseas and spent the first several months trying to figure out how to get American TV over here because using phones/tablets wasn’t an option for my Roku TV. I bought a subscription to ExpressVPN but still couldn’t use a phone because of the precision location requirements. I finally bought this on a Prime Day sale and couldn’t be happier. I am literally running an Italian modem into my Aircove, and then running TP-Link mesh routers from that. Once I logged in and set up the VPN on the Aircove, everything connected to my mesh routers (didn’t have to change passwords on everything) worked as though it were connected to the US. All my YTTV channels and movies were back! Took all of about 12 min to get it set up. Cons: 1) there were no instructions, you had to go to a website to read what to do. 2) there’s no app to manage the router, you just have to go to the IP address on the router (how do you not have an app!) 3) expressvpn needs more server locations in the US. It pales in comparison to Nord and Surfshark. Pros: 1) Built in VPN that works with no special or highly technical configurations. 2) quick set up and never have to touch it again. 3) ability to turn VPN off and on to cater to your preferences. 4) everything connected to it is protected (even if you use an old router or mesh routers to connect) Ultimately this is probably worth it at full price. But I’m very happy I was able to get it on sale.

Setup guide for Aircove Router
Ok, These routers can be either straight forward to setup and use or they will not connect. Firstly these routers should come in a black box, the box will have an Aircove ExpressVPN RED sleeve cover around the box, and finally the whole package should be sealed and wrapped in the clingfilm clear wrap, unopened straight from the factory. If your router does not come in this state and looks opened and used. Then i would 100% send it back because if you have setup problems, then you don't know whether the router is faulty or your home setup is the issue. Can be a real headache. Next you have to look at your ISP router that the internet company gave you. Go into it's setup and turn off the wireless router and router functionality. You just want it to behave as a modem. Next you want to connect your ExpressVPN router via its internet port to a free port on the router that you now have setup as a modem. Some ISP routers have a special port you can only use to connect to another router. Others don't care. You can connect to any port. Most will allow you to connect to any port. Next go into the Aircove router SETUP menu via its wireless username and password. You can connect via a LAN cable but it does not make a difference. When you open up the browser you should type in expressvpnrouter.com or 192.168.132.1. This will lead you into the wizard that will guide you through the setup. Now this is where you can have problems. As the wizard goes through, the first thing it will do is try to connect to the internet via your ISP modem port. If it succeeds then your in business. You can carry on and complete the installation and you are protected by ExpressVPN (Make sure you login in and turn the VPN ON within the router SETUP menu.) The ExpressVPN router light will go from a flashing light to a steady ON light. If it does not connect, Then first check the Aircove router AircoveOS software version. I have found ver 4.7.5.4443 works, is stable and allows the router to connect to the internet. In fact i had a router with ver 4.0 OS SW. It did not connect to the internet. I updated it to 5.x.x (latest). It did not connect to the internet. I then updated the OS SW to 4.7.5.4443. The router connected to the internet and worked correctly. Therefore if your router has older OS SW. It is worth updating the OS SW to the latest version 5.x.x. This can be done within the router setup SW. If this does not work. Then download 4.7.5.4443 OS SW. This version should get the router connected to the internet. The file can be downloaded from ExpressVPN website link for the 4.7.5.4443 OS SW. One final point if you are using two ExpressVPN Aircove routers like i am. Then the "IP address" and "First client IP address" cannot be the same on both routers. Both router's will come with the default IP address 192.168.132.1 and First client IP address 192.168.132.10. You can go into the router setup menu and go to menu option Network Settings, then go into Local Network settings. Then change the "IP address" under Aircove IP setup title, from 192.168.132.1 to for example 192.168.142.1. Under DHCP server title, the "First client IP address" will automatically change to 192.168.142.10. Save the setting and away you go. Remember when you log back into the second ExpressVPN Aircove router. Its IP address for access to the SETUP menu will now be 192.168.142.1 NOT 192.168.132.1. Overall the routers have been excellent, with good speed and connection. Within the SETUP menu there are also options to check the router is protecting you. Hope this guide helps those of you struggling to setup the router.
