Is the Alarm sound jarring? Or is it gentle?

The alarm sound is a reasonably quiet chirp. The snooze is the same except twice as fast. What I don't like is that you can't set the alarm for the exact time. It will be in the neighborhood ( as much as 10 minutes later than you want). This clock is new to me and I imagine it takes practice to get it where you want it. Other than that, it's a neat little clock and keeps time fine. Hope this helps.

Is this back-lit at all when you are NOT pressing the light button, so you can tell the time in the dark?

When you press AND HOLD the snooze button, the little white LED in the top/right corner is lit. Release the snooze button and the light goes out. I.e., the only way the light goes on is to push-and-hold the snooze button.

Is it quiet, non ticking?

Not quiet! It keeps me up at night. No ticking but not quiet.
