Ethiopia is an ancient and thought-provoking land. How much do you know about one of the earliest nations to accept Christianity? Ethiopia has a long history. It boasts one of the longest-running continuous civilizations on the planet; even the origins of humanity have been traced back to Ethiopia. Ethiopian kingdoms date back to the days of the Bible, and mentions of Ethiopian monarchs can be found all throughout the historical record. Ethiopians rubbed shoulders with Egyptians, Romans, Ottomans, Portuguese, and a whole host of other nations and empires throughout the centuries. Throughout all of these encounters, Ethiopia has strived to be strong and independent. And on all those occasions, Ethiopian determination and perhaps a little luck have made sure these aspirations were achieved. For example, in the early 1500s, when the flames of Ethiopian civilization were nearly extinguished by the armies of a neighboring sultanate, a joint Ethiopian/Portuguese army (led by none other than Vasco da Gamaโs son, Christopher da Gama) came together just in time to heroically fight off the invaders and ensure Ethiopiaโs survival. This was just one example of many in which Ethiopians faced a tremendous obstacle yet were able to overcome it right when all hope seemed lost. The story of Ethiopia is an inspiring one. And this book will take you through the astonishing history of this ancient and thought-provoking land in its entirety. Review: A compact history - Sometimes we want to take a historical subject that we know little about and get a brief gloss to learn enough to discover which parts of the subject we want to delve into at greater length. "History of Ethiopia" is exactly what we need to satisfy that desire. We get the entire history of the African nation, from the very ancient days up to this very year, 2022. naturally, we do not get many nuances. What we do get is the big picture. We know how the various periods in history fit together. From the Queen of Sheba to the nasty era of the Communist Derg, we get a little bit of everything. One irritation that I had was the coverage of the Ethiopian-Somalia war in the 1970s. The crucial role played by the Cuban army is committed entirely. On the other hand, the 1540 Portuguese expedition headed by Christopher da Gama is briefly but adequately covered. Save for the intervention of da Gama the kingdom might well have been lost. If you need a fast introduction to Ethiopia, this is a good place to begin. Captivating History, the maker, has dozens of similar books, often on specific, narrowly focuses topics. Review: Good book - Spent a year living in Ethiopia 2004 to 2005. What is have read seems very accurate. Very informative book on the history of Ethiopia.
