WD Blue SSD

My 6-year old HP Pavilion laptop with a Core i7 - 7th Gen - was a race horse when I purchased it - it came with a 1TB mechanical drive. Recently it's been slowing down to a crawl, and taking multiple reboots to start up (especially after those monthly Windows updates), and just plain old bogging down and freezing when I've been making it think too much or gobble too many web pages at one time -- despite all my best efforts to keep it defrag'ed and CCclean'ed, etc - but it's probably my fault because I eventually filled the hard drive to 87% capacity with my "student study notes" WORD document files and .pdf's and video files (not apps or programs). I needed more capacity and more speed. That's why I purchased this WG Blue 2TB SSD. My friend who is a computer tech, told me THIS particular model WD Blue SA510 WDS200T2B0A SSD drive is the one he recommends. WD customers get free use of Acronis True Image for cloning. I'm a tech level "barely novice", but I'm able to follow instructions and to take educated guesses when I reach a fork in the road with no instructions about which way to go. WD's website has a page "Steps to Clone an Operating System Drive with Acronis True Image for Western Digital". I printed it out and studied it, and I watched a few YouTube videos showing me how to open the laptop and replace the hard drive -- one of the videos showed how to use Acronis for WD -- and then I started following the steps of the process. The Acronis True Image cloning instructions are not nearly as complete as I would have liked -- maybe not updated, and some of the "next step/next screen view" that actually happened, were not as the instruction said would happen -- so I had to make some guesses during the 11-page, step-by-step process -- I wouldn't rate those cloning INSTRUCTIONS as 5 stars, maybe only 3 at best -- but I got lucky, because I finally ended up at the actual cloning process -- and from there, it only took 2-1/2 hours to complete the cloning, and then when I restarted (JAN 20, 2024), my laptop is lightning fast again and has been running great, and I'm VERY HAPPY. Now I'll just have to wait and see how reliable the new drive is. I'll update this review if anything changes; so if it's not updated, then all is well.

Replaced a 2013 HP Envy C: HDD with a WD Blue SSD. Result was amazing: start, shutdown, application startup and general operation are very much faster perhaps up to 3X faster. It is truly amazing. BUT, cloning took three frustrating days to sort out and online searches for cloning tips were unhelpful. After much trial and error, this is the easiest, safest, and least costly way to clone a C: HDD to an SSD: 1) Buy a SSD the same size as the HDD to be cloned. (Other sizes are possible but too much trouble to clone.) 2) Get 2 USB 3.0 (2.0 works too) to SATA adapters. One must has a 12v pwr supply for the HDD. (The SSD is powered through USB.) 3) Use a separate PC (I used a laptop) from the clone source. VERY IMPORTANT KEY TO SUCCESS! 4) Load the free SSD vendor cloning SW (Acronis True Image for WD Edition for a Western Digital SSD.) 5) With the separate PC up and running, connect the target (SSD) and source (HDD) using the USB adapters 6) Run DISKMGMT.msc to activate the target SSD. Do not partition it or assign it a drive letter. 7) Backup the source HDD using the Acronis backup tool. (Just in case.) 8) Run the cloning software and follow the cloning instructions to pick the target and source drives and then start cloning. This will take quite a while, be patient. 9) Wait for cloning to complete (an hour or more - go have lunch). 10) Remove the USB adapter cables from separate PC. Under no circumstances restart separate PC with source or target drive attached, it my corrupt all of the drives including the separate PC's C: drive. 11) Physically install the now cloned SSD into the source PC. Your will need a 2.5 to 3.5 adapter. 12) Keep the old source HDD until you are sure the new target SSD and your source PC get along then properly dispose of it. That's it! Depending on drive sizes and separate PC speed this should take no more than 2 to 4 hours with no hassle or frustration and the results are truly amazing.

I used this drive to upgrade storage on my wife's small form factor PC. The drive itself is fine, not exactly top of the line performance but it's more than fast enough and large enough for everyday computing use. My only gripe is the included western digital cloning and utility software. The cloning software only works if you have the new drive installed as an internal drive. If you try to clone an old hard drive with this new drive attached via USB, the cloning software doesn't recognize the new drive as a Western Digital drive and it will refuse to work. This is a huge limitation that makes the included software completely USELESS for most people. Most people will want to clone the drive before removing the old drive out, since there's no easy way to even run the cloning software from a bare empty WD drive and some computers don't have any way to attach more than one internal drive. So that's a huge fail on Western Digital's part. I own the full version of Acronis so I just used that to clone the old drive. After cloning, this new drive swapped in for the old one without any problems and it has worked great ever since. So yes this is a nice SSD but if you're using it to replace an existing drive you will probably want to find a different cloning solution since Western Digital's software doesn't work if you need to use a USB adapter to attach the new drive while cloning.

I used this to upgrade/replace the original HDD in my 10-year old Dell Dimension XPS8300. I needed a new internal bracket to mount this smaller drive but in general it was pretty easy to install and clone the old drive to the new SDD using the software you download from the Western Digital site. The increase in speed and performance has been profound. PC boots in 10-15 seconds -vs- well over a minute with the old drive, and the overall speed and response finding and copying files and opening software and web pages far exceeded my expectations. I was thinking of shopping for a new PC but that's not necessary now, my old one is better than new! Update: I recently bought a second WD 500GB SSD drive to replace the HDD in an older Acer laptop (Acer Aspire E1-472P-6860) that had become so slow it was virtually unusable. Just like my old Dell desktop, the new drive transformed the Acer to better than new performance. Cold boot time dropped from 2-3 minutes to under 30 seconds, and it now goes from sleeping to full awake in about 5 seconds Vs 30-45 seconds. Everything is snappier, including browsing, downloads and software installs/updates. Very happy with upgrade.

Heck yeah, for gamers and for the price on amazon prime day (175) it's perfect. As fast as both 1 and 2tb Intel 660 nvme drives for loading games. Of course for data transfers it's limited by sata connection. 400tb write endurance is a good life expectancy for gaming as long as your not going crazy with daily half tb writes. So 100gb erase/writes would last about 4000 days, which is enough life for most but I just moderate the amount of game installs. Between my drives I have a petabyte so I don't worry much but I still temper my game switching so that I can keep these drives for the coming decade or two. In short, good for gamers, maybe not for heavy content creation or video editing. For that a samsung evo may be best, or any other mlc or tlc drive. After a year of mostly only using my 1tb 660p which has 200tb endurance, my life on it is 99 percent. Some easy math says it would take 100 years for half the endurance of a fairly heavy user, so if this 2tb western digital was your only gaming drive you'd be set for life. Take heed that wd was awful to do business on their website, and they and seagate and other companies had a scandal recently with labeling shingled magnetic devices as a higher tier more reliable drive. Many families probably lost precious family photos believing their drive was more sturdy than it was. But if you buy from Amazon then you can be sure your getting the best sata ssd for gaming in the most competitive price range. Don't believe the hype that ssds have a noticeable difference in game loading times.

After multi issues with Seagate drives in the past I have gone exclusively WD with no issues ever since. This 2 TB SSD has made a huge difference in the performance of my systems. I have a high-end work station with everything from standard Office software to the Adobe video editing capability. An average full boot up time would be 10-12 minutes to load everything including all the cloud services. With the SSD it is under 2 minutes. Everything loads amazingly fast and most of the programs perform so much better. It was an easy install. I cloned my boot up drive using Macrium software, then just swapped them out. Hands on time less than 5 minutes but it did take a while to clone the 2 TB drive. I am amazingly satisfied with this purchase, so I bought a second on and did the same exact thing with my laptop. Went from a 500GB standard drive to a 2 TB SSD with now great performance on my high-end laptop and work station. I would definitely buy again, because I did. Thanks WD.

I've bought WD products before, and they have always been reliable. I purchased the 2 TB SSD drive here, and went to install it using Acronis True Image for WD, a piece of software found directly on the WD website. In five install attempts I received the same message--specifically, that one of the products being installed must be WD to use this software. So the WD website features a WD-specific product that doesn't recognize a WD drive. Sad that WD doesn't seem to be monitoring its own website. Sad also that the website administrators are so clueless. Instead I downloaded and used Macrium Reflect Disk Free (trial), which worked fine. Watch an online tutorial before you install. Simply specify the drive to be cloned along with the destination drive, then drag and drop drive partitions--in the order that they appear on the source drive-- to the new SSD. You can even shrink or enlarge partitions as needed to fit the new drive. Now my Asus laptop boots in about 12 seconds, not 2 minutes. This is probably the single best upgrade you can make to any computer. This upgrade can extend the life of older machines until the new i9 core processors become cheaper and more widely available. BTW, I have no monetary interest in Macrium or WD. So I'm subtracting one star from an otherwise strong product for the frustration and hassle of having to search for and find the right install software elsewhere.

For the money, I wanted something as tank-solid as my Intel SSD's I have. This thing feels like the packaging would weigh more. I was put off by this but after awhile, I have come to respect it. I mean, the light-weight is perfect if used in a laptop and would help to keep it lighter. Or maybe an IOT project. I guess I feel like it had to be heavy, or large, for the money, like that feeling you get spending $100 on a large-capacity SDCARD. Fact is, this thing is not only cool, and has NEVER felt hot to the touch, like my older Intel SSD's, but it's fast! Even when using a USB3 to SATA3 adapter, I am getting 250+MB/s. OK, so that is 2gbps and not even optimal, but for a USB plug-in high-capacity drive, that's insane compared to what I have seen with my older SSD's. I have had no issues with it although I have only had it a couple of months. I wish the warranty was still 5 years and not 3, but it is definitely serving my system WELL with the speed, weight, and also cool-running. We will see how it keeps up. If I run into issues with it, I'll post back here. As it stands though, I'll get a few more.

Ho acquistato questo SSD WD blue da 2 Tb per il mio MacBook Pro mid 2012. Risultato: molto soddisfatto sia per la velocità di avvio del mio pc, sia per la garanzia sul prodotto, pur riscontrando 2 problemi che comunque ho risolto. Il primo problema, riguardante il processo di clonazione del disco: il software gratuito in dotazione (Acronis True Image per WD) non è idoneo per la clonazione di disco con partizione bootcamp (dual boot MacOs e Windows), in quanto dopo il processo di clonazione la partizione Windows non era più avviabile. Ho risolto utilizzando il software Paragon Hard Disk Manager su ambiente MacOs, creando una chiavetta di avvio per la clonazione del disco. Il secondo problema ha riguardato il ciclo di vita residuo del SSD rilevabile dal Dashboard della Western Digital: dopo pochissimi giorni di utilizzo il valore è sceso subito prima al 99%, poi al 98%... al 96%... fino al 95%, per cui ho deciso di effettuare il reso Amazon con sostituzione! Tutto Ok! Il processo di reso e sostituzione di Amazon è stato efficientissimo! Ho ricevuto un secondo SSD perfettamente funzionante.... dopo quasi 1 mese di utilizzo, il valore residuo è al 100%, come ci si dovrebbe aspettare!

I wanted to upgrade my mid-2012 MacBook Pro non-retina with a 2TB SSD. It seemed as if the WD 2TB SSD should work, although checking with both WD & Apple, neither would guarantee it. So I went ahead, clone my existing 2TB 5400 HD onto the SSD using SuperDuper!, and swapped the SSD into the MacBook Pro. Rebooted, and voilá - opened with no dramas (other than having to re-validate 2012 MSOffice). Ran some speed tests - system boots 500% faster, LibreOffice for Mac opens 8x faster (previously very slow), and Handbrake, burning DVDs and all apps open & operate way quicker! Works perfectly via wireless with Time Machine on an 8TB WD MyCloud device, and I now use the old HD 2TB drive as an extra backup via SuperDuper! Couldn’t be happier with the unit, and can thoroughly recommend it to any one wanting to extend the mid-2012 (or earlier) MacBook or Pro for a few more years.
