"Bitty Bat lived with his family in an old yacht house on Happy Island in the Thousand Island Regions of the St. Lawrence River. She liked her home and the nice family who owned it — who appreciated plants and animals. From the rafter of the family’s yacht house Bitty enjoyed watching their children, 13 year old Katie and 11 year old Ken, fishing and swimming there with their friends. Ollie Owl and Olivia Owl lived in a Scotch Pine on Happy Island and were good friends of Bitty. She called on their friendship and the friendship of the river’s wildlife to help Katie and Ken through a dangerous situation. The courage of Ollie, Olivia, Bitty and their friends was proven in this adventure. The illustrations introduce the characters and set the scene of this adventure. Footnotes provide further description to aid in the visualization of the bats, birds, fish, and animals in this story of friendship and courage."
