Top Gun: Maverick (4K UHD): The Gold Standard for Home Theater
I’m running a 7.2.4 Dolby Atmos system built around ELAC Debut 2.0 speakers powered by a Denon AVR-X4500H, with external amps and Top Gun: Maverick instantly became my go-to reference disc. This 4K Blu-ray looks and sounds absolutely stunning — the kind of experience that reminds you why physical media still matters. The Dolby Atmos TrueHD mix is incredibly clean, immersive, and natural. It’s not artificially loud like some other discs, but that’s part of what makes it so good. At reference level (0.0 dB) it can sound a little soft, but around +2 to +4 dB above reference, the entire soundstage opens up — jets thunder overhead, dialogue locks perfectly to the screen, and bass hits deep and tight without boominess. Here’s something a lot of people overlook: mixes like Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and DTS-HD Master Audio are mastered for large cinema spaces, so they sometimes need a small volume bump at home to reach full theatrical impact. By contrast, hotter mixes like Jurassic Park (4K DTS:X) or Ready Player One (Dolby Atmos) already hit full intensity right at reference level. Visually, the HDR10 transfer is razor sharp with incredible contrast and color depth. Streaming can’t touch this disc — most “4K Dolby Vision” streams are heavily compressed, running a fraction of the bitrate of a 4K Blu-ray. The difference in both picture and sound is night and day. If you’ve got a solid AVR and relatively efficient speakers, you don’t need to worry about turning it up a few decibels above reference level as modern receivers handle it easily. Bottom line: Top Gun: Maverick is not just a great movie — it’s a system demo and a gold standard reference disc. System used for review: Denon AVR-X4500H (MultEQ-X), ELAC Debut 2.0 7.2.4, Panasonic UB420

Top Gun: Maverick – A New Hope With Jets and Daddy Issues
At this point, let’s just admit Top Gun: Maverick is the best Star Wars movie Disney never made. You’ve got your aging rogue pilot who refuses to follow orders, a cocky new generation that doesn't believe in the Force (I mean, teamwork), and a mission so suicidal even the ghost of Obi-Wan is like, “You sure about this?” The plot? Simple. Fly down a narrow trench at impossible speed, dodge lasers (missiles, but let’s not kid ourselves), and drop a perfect shot into a tiny exhaust port. You know, totally original. Definitely not a Death Star run. And yet… it’s brilliant. This isn’t about realism. If it was, Maverick’s bones would be dust after that first blast. That man yeeted himself out of a jet like a burnt marshmallow and somehow limped into a diner like, “You got pie?” Plot armor level: Beskar. But it’s earned. Every note — from the roaring engines to the slow piano of nostalgia — hits with just the right amount of cheese, heart, and adrenaline. And the moment those jets take off? You feel it. Like your couch just ejected you emotionally at 7.5 Gs. Is it predictable? Sure. Did I care? Absolutely not. By the time that final landing hits, you're not rolling your eyes — you're saluting the screen like Maverick just bought you a beer. Final Transmission: Top Gun: Maverick is loud, absurd, and so damn sincere it makes you believe in heroes again. It’s a love letter to speed, sacrifice, and the art of saying, “Screw the odds — I’ll make the shot anyway.” ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Five stars. Would follow this man into the sky, the trench, or even another sequel. Just… maybe not into space. Love ya, Tom — but I’ve seen your interviews.

One of Tom Cruises Best
Excellent movie. One of Tom Cruise’s best. The movie industry would be severely lacking without Tom’s work.

Great movie and easy replacement process for defective Blue-ray DVD
Most reviews about this DVD are about the movie and I agree with the many of the accolades. The focus of my review is about customer satisfaction. The original order arrived at my neighbor's front door. The delivery picture showed it wasn't my house and there was enough detail to figure out it was my next-door neighbor. He had already placed it on my front stoop the next morning before I talked to him about the misdelivery. That was a fun mystery. Weeks later when we tried the play this Blue-ray DVD, our Blue-ray DVD player gave the error message: Cannot operate this disc. The disc looked fine and the player could properly play other Blue-ray discs so we assumed we received a defective disc. Amazon made the replacement process very easy with a few clicks and we took advantage of returning the DVD via a UPS store. It was as easy as telling the attendant that this is an Amazon return, having him scan the QR code Amazon provided and handing over the DVD. And the really good news is that the replacement disc worked fine, including all the capabilities and extra features. A scan of many of the one-star reviews revealed an assortment of technical problems with the disc by those users. Assuming you order a Blue-ray DVD for a Blue-ray DVD player, it should work in most cases if there is not a problem with the disc.

Awesome real action, and the acting is above average as well
Who needs CGI when you have the real thing? Tom Cruise refused to do a Top Gun sequel until the flying could be done with live action and there was a worthy script. It was worth the wait. Needless to say, once we get past the Darkstar fiction (which is in significant part well-done state-of-the-art CGI), the aerial scenes in Top Gun: Maverick are cinematically spectacular. Watch the extra features: those are real F-18 Super Hornets flown by real military pilots with the actual actors (after months of training) experiencing real flight conditions. Amazing stuff. And unlike many sequels, the story line not only follows the original plot, but expands and improves upon it. You must know the original plot to get many of references in this sequel: Maverick is still the same crazy-loyal character, pushing limits in his flying, regardless of the personal cost, while struggling to do right by the people around him. We can guess that Charlie got that pomotion and went to Washington, and Penny has been an on-again, off-again love interest over the intervening years (Penny was also mentioned by name as a former girlfriend in the original Top Gun: Meg Ryan line in the bar scene, just before they all move to the piano to perform Great Balls of Fire). Doing right in that relationship, late as it may be, is just one of several original plots lines that gets resolved in a very satisfying way, along with trying to do right with Bradley while honoring Carole's dying wishes, and his loyalty and protectiveness of his Darkstar team and the mission trainees. The scenes with Ice, showing the evolution of their relationship from the original, may showcase Tom Cruise's best acting ever. A Best Picture Oscar nomination well deserved.

Pure fun
Like many others, I eagerly awaited auditioning this film on my home theater system. As anticipated, the disc certainly demonstrates that image and sound quality at home can rival or exceed that obtainable in a standard theatre, or even one with more advanced imaging and sound systems. Having some hearing impairment, I now find it preferable to view films at home, where I can engage the subtitle system. This sequel to the original “Top Gun” is a technical triumph, with a groundbreaking array of high resolution cameras placed in a jet plane to allow the actors to be photographed while undergoing rather strenuous aerobatic maneuvers. Mr. Cruise, in producing this film, insisted that no computer graphics could replicate such footage, and he was right. The actors are to be complimented for their willingness to undergo such demanding activities! I do presume there was plenty of computer graphics employed to provide the scenes of the jets in the climactic escape sequence following the bombing of the nuclear reactor, and if true, it was certainly of comparable image quality to make its visibility rather difficult to distinguish from the “real” scenes. The storyline is simple, particularly if you are familiar with the first film. I understand Mr. Cruise’s apparent intention to avoid excessive profanity, and the very limited employment of explicitness in the love scene with Ms. Connelly made it possible to achieve a film rating allowing a general audience not to be offended. The massive success of this movie at the box office might make such content decisions more popular in the future. In summary, if one wants to have a demonstration disc for extraordinary aerial photography, this presentation fits the bill for sure, and more than overcomes its shortcomings as an in-depth character study.
