Perfect for drummers, music teachers, and advanced students. The New Breed by Gary Chester is a revolutionary drum method designed to transform the way modern drummers approach coordination, creativity, and timing. Developed by one of the most recorded studio drummers of the 1960s and 1970s, this system provides the foundation for mastering the demands of today’s studio and live performance environments. Ideal for serious drummers, it helps players refine focus, balance, and rhythmic control. What’s Included: This updated edition features access to exclusive online audio, including an insightful interview with Gary Chester. The book introduces a complete system built around independence and concentration training. Rather than isolated drills, each exercise challenges drummers to lead with either hand, develop rhythmic awareness, and expand creativity across styles such as rock, funk, jazz, and fusion. The structured systems are designed to inspire new musical ideas that translate directly to performance. Why It’s Valuable: The New Breed helps drummers build confidence, enhance timing, and improve coordination under pressure. It’s widely used by professionals and educators alike to strengthen reading skills, left and right-hand lead, and click awareness. Endorsed by renowned drummers including Kenny Aronoff, Danny Gottlieb, and Dave Weckl, this method remains an essential tool for anyone committed to mastering the modern drum set. Bring your drumming to life. Whether used in lessons, self-study, or professional practice, this book inspires growth and mastery behind the kit. A perfect gift for dedicated drummers or teachers seeking a timeless and transformative practice method. Review: A classic for a reason - EVERY drummer needs to own a copy - I have owned a copy of this book for over 20 years (had to replace a few times from wearing it out) and I still keep coming back! Some would argue this is the only book you need, I would say this paired with The Complete Drummers Vocabulary will give you a lifetime of material to work on. My goal as a drum set instructor is to get my students working in this book as soon as possible. I use a matrix-styled approach to introduce enough coordination to start with the systems and it is not intended for a beginner. There are TONS of ways to interpret the exercises and create new and challenging ways to go through this book; if you are reading this - go ahead and pull the trigger on this classic drum book. Review: A must have - This is a must for any serious drummer.

Great Book
This is a great book that will provide you with a system for your playing. The book made me rethink the drum kit and how I approach it. It is not a drum beat book but an exercise in developing independence and amber-dexterity on the kit. The New Breed is definitely worth the price of purchase. The real investment is the the time working through it.

A LOT MORE RELEVANT THAN "THE CLASSICS"
THIS REVIEW IS FOR ROCK, POP, BLUES, FUNK, SOUL AND THE KIND DRUMMERS.... NOT FOR JAZZ DRUMMERS OR DRUMMERS THAT LOVE EXTREMELY FAST AND INTRICATED, TECHNICAL STUFF I received this book yesterday among stick control and the chapin book...i have already syncopation and some more. Let me say that i never quite understood all the hustle about books that are for snare drum, or snare and bass. We are supposed to play drums guys!!, to play hi-hat, bass, cymbals, snare, toms...all as a unity, with music in mind. The relationship between the instruments commented above is the beauty of playing drums (if not why to bother right?). Yes, for that you must have an idea of how to hold and control a stick, and some rudiments wont hurt you. BUT,you can be proficent with the excercises in stick control and syncopation, and be an horrible drummer at the same time!!! INSTEAD, if you are proficent with the system developed by this incredible guy, no way you can be an horrible drummer!!! OUR INTRUMENT IS NOT THE SNARE, IS THE DRUM SET. OUR POURPOSE IS TO COMBINE THE SOUND OF DIFERENT INSTRUMENTS IN A MEANINGFULL WAY... I did just a few bars of combinations with the systems and the melodies...after 2 hours i could play some interesting things. You can feel how every excercise is training you to be a very well rounded drummer. The independence is worked a lot, but in somewhat indirect way (not for the sake of it)...and always in relation to a MELODY, or a rythm....THINGS MAKE SENSE FOR A DRUMMER!! The exercises don't leave you with the question....do i really need this? IF I COULD KEEP JUST ONE BOOK TO LEARN TO PLAY DRUMS, THIS WOULD BE IT, HANDS DOWN WITHOUT A SECOND OF HESITATION. THE OTHER BOOKS, AS I SEE IT, ARE A COMPLEMENT FOR THIS ONE, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND. I guess if you were doubting about this book now you are not!!:) Cheers.

There's a good reason all the reviews on here are perfect 5s.
Essential book, and even though you'll see many reviews mentioning how difficult it can get, don't let that discourage you. I have been using it with my 12 year old son as a way to teach him how to read music. We mainly use the very beginning exercises and move slowly through. Even with the first few applications you'll start to feel your left foot (everyone's weakest link) start to pick up on pace with everything else. The material is put across in a way that is very well thought out in terms of graduating difficulty. It also covers mobility around the kit and encourages creativity. Something many other well regarded drum books seem to ignore. Go buy it already. Just plan to put in some work. You could spend many many years applying what's here in a myriad of ways.

Take Your Drumming to a New Level
I'd call myself an intermediate player now and it's because of books like this one with its creative exercises. I've just started, 'm doing about 3 exercises per day and I've already seen improvement in my coordination. The exercises are challenging enough but do-able. (I was calling myself a beginner before I picked up this book, but I'm getting it, I'm easily following the exercises, they're simple enough to grasp, so I'd say I've graduated from beginner to intermediate.) As for the CD that comes with the book, it's a plus. I'm learning a lot hearing a top drummer speak of his new "system" of drumming. All in all, it's a great purchase, the price is pretty good to have someone like Gary Chester teaching me how to get really comfotable playing my drum kit. BTW I got this book because my drum teacher recommended it. He says he uses it with his advance students, so it's drum-teacher-approved. I also recommend Drum Set Warm-Ups: Essential Exercises for Improving Technique (Berklee Guide) for improving technique.

Beware! Audio Download is an Interview Only - No Drumming Audio AT ALL
I bought this book many years ago and now that I teach, I thought I would purchase it again since I saw "With On-Line Audio" in the title. Who expects an interview with a drum book? I'm sure 99% of drummers would expect drumming audio files when the the title says" With On-line Audio". Who are they fooling? I thought it would be nice to have audio files of the material in the book. Well, what a DISAPPOINTING surprise to find out that the "On-Line Audio" is an interview w/Gary Chester. It says it in the description but if you happen to miss it, you'll be disappointed so I want to make sure drummers know there are no drumming audio files at all. I would have returned the book but I gave it to a student instead. MD knows the book is hard and they know many drummers would buy it again for the audio of the systems and grooves in this book. Why don't they include some drumming audio files? Is that too difficult? Who needs to hear an old interview? Drummers want to hear the systems and grooves in the book.
