Beautiful flint and steel set
Really attractive and large flint and steel (ferrocerium) fire starter. It does take some practice to start a fire with this, but it can come in very handy in an emergency situation. It's nice enough to be given as a gift and has a nice bamboo handle and braided paracord lanyard with the striking blade attached. I've used flint and steel several times over the years so I already knew what to do and it works well. The material they used for the steel shavings is a lot better than the old types we used to have and it just takes a small amount of tinder and some patience to get enough sparks to get a fire going. It helps to have all the twigs and larger pieces of wood ready to go to help build it up because it doesn't stay lit for long when using dry brush as tinder. Very satisfied with this fire starter. I have it in my camping bag and although I don't plan to use it often, it's great to have in case I ever need it. I would recommend practicing with it before you go out into the wilderness, you will be happy you did.

Large in the hand
Larger than most strikers Iโve tried well built and throws a lot of sparks.

A large, well made fire starting tool
This is well made and nice looking fire starting tool. Unlike some, this one has a nice wood handle, a sparking rod that is 1/2" inch around and nearly 5 long and a meaty steel striker attached by a long loop of paracord. That heavy striker is appreciated because a lot of these things expect you to scrape them with your knife or axe, which works but dulls them. Because of it's size I find it easier to use and expect it will last a lot longer. To use one of these you DO have to have some good tinder. You can't light a twig and sometimes even paper is hard to light. One of the best fire starters I have seen is a simple cotton ball with a little petroleum jelly rubbed into it. These will catch and stay lit even in the wind and rain. If you don't have cotton balls, try dryer lint. You can smash these down into a small space, before lighting just pull them apart a bit to fluff them up. Even without the petroleum jelly these make good tinder, but without the jelly you have to keep them dry.
