I have a VW Touareg 3.0V6 TDI (2012), which is a great car in many ways, but has a known design fault regarding its air intake system. Online forums such as mytreg.com have revealed potential for water to enter the air intake box, soaking the paper air filter, and in some cases leading to paper particles being ingested into the engine, destroying turbos, and even causing engine hydro-locking. The design of the main air intake, and possible blockage of two water drains, is the main issue. Regular checking and clearing the water drains is one way to prevent such damage, but additional protection can be gained by using a paperless air filter that is impervious to water damage, and can also be cleaned/reused. I'm not personally convinced of performance advantages from such filters, but in this case the safety factor is more important. This AEM filter is a development of the well-known K&N brand, but doesn't require re-oiling after cleaning - a potential for damage to MAF sensors if done incorrectly. It comes direct from the USA, so delivery may take up to 2 weeks, but so far I'm well pleased by the filter's quality of construction and fit.

Bought this for my VW Touareg TDI hoping for better airflow and throttle response plus the idea of a reusable filter was a nice bonus. After installing it, I noticed an immediate reduction in throttle response. Thought maybe it was my mind playing tricks on me so I gave it a chance for about 90days at which point I put the factory filter back in and immediately noticed a big improvement in throttle response and overall performance. It's totally contrary to all of the marketing materials you read. The construction of the filter is good quality but the performance was an actual let down and not the improvement I'd hoped it would be.
