A crust must!
I got this as a replacement to a pie bird I had for decades. Not sure when or how I lost the original but it really does make a difference in your crust using the pie bird. I use this in apple pie to vent the steam from inside the pie and to keep the pie crust from getting mushy. The pie bird stands in the middle of the pie during baking and once the pie is baked, his job is done. I wash mine by hand and use a nipple brush (from baby bottles) to clean the beak. Wonderful kitchen tool.

Happy Pie Bird.
I love my pie bird. It was reasonably priced and does the job of keeping my pies from oozing over…and it’s cute! Four and twenty black birds baked in a pie..😊

Great product, bad shipping container
This was exactly what we wanted. They are very nice. The only thing keeping me from giving five starts was that they were shipped in a paper envelope. The boxes around most of the pie birds were crushed and several of them fell out of the boxes within the envelope. These are fragile and I was surprised they were not broken.

Bird Vents Steam Well, Looks Amazingly Adorable to Boot
The Norpro Ceramic Pie Bird is a useful and whimsical item to have in any baker's kitchen. The pie bird works very effectively at venting double crusted pies. To use, simply place the bird in the center of a double crusted pie before baking - you simply cut a small hole on the top of the crust then place the bird in. The accumulated steam will vent out of the bird's open mouth while the pie bakes. I like adding additional decorative cuts on the top of my pies along with the bird - this ensures that no pie filling will leak out and be lost to the bottom of the oven. When not in use, the bird makes a cute little shelf decoration. The little black bird is very well made and feels quite durable. The bird I received had no chips or cracks, and his color was consistent all over. I've received many compliments on this silly little bird - he's both a useful and adorable little tool to use when baking filled pies.
