IBM Cognos 10 Report Studio: Practical Examples

Couldn't get Cognos to work. If you work in a corp environment where they won't let you load the sample data files then you are forced to download a 30 day trial version (of which the link in the book doesn't work). Couldn't get Cognos to work despite no errors in log file. As well there are no instructions as to what you with the downloaded book files. Waste of time. Spent days installing and re-installing trying to get Cognos to work. Save your money.

This is perfect for someone who is new to Cognos Report Studio. I only wish there were more books like this with practical examples to learn from.

I was really hoping for more examples and step-by-step processes for creating complex reports. I could use a little less theory and lot more examples and "how-to's". I learn more by example than by paragraphs of words.

This is the only book I've found, so far, that gives step-by-step instructions for real reports using as much of the functionality of the tool as possible. It gives alternative ways to do the same tasks. I found an error in some of the code in the first example (missing parenthesis) which almost stopped me in my tracks. There are many, many, steps to each report so it is easy to get lost, but the instructions are quite good. I'm not at all a fan of Cognos, but this book has helped be get past the distaste. I'm still looking for a book that explains - in relatively plain English - how to fill in data for charts.
