2017 Amelia Bloomer List, Early Readers Nonfiction This picture book biography follows the life of Eugenie Clark, the Japanese-American scientist, researcher, and diver, who became famous as "The Shark Lady" for her groundbreaking discoveries about shark behavior. Before Eugenie Clark's groundbreaking research, most people thought sharks were vicious, blood-thirsty killers. From the first time she saw a shark in an aquarium, Japanese-American Eugenie was enthralled. Instead of frightening and ferocious eating machines, she saw sleek, graceful fish gliding through the water. After she became a scientistโan unexpected career path for a woman in the 1940sโshe began taking research dives and training sharks, earning her the nickname "The Shark Lady." Review: Children's book - Good book to have for younger aged children to read about sea animals Review: Interesting introduction to Eugenie Clark..... - This book is an excellent introduction for younger children to Eugenie Clark and her research about sharks and other ocean dwellers. There is even a discussion about the secrets of the "sleeping sharks in Mexico who were not really sleeping. Her discovery of the Moses sole and its many poison glands that protect it from predators is left out, but most children will read more books about Genie Clark and receive more information about her research. Perhaps a parent could read some books for older children to their children who want to know more right away. The book ends with the encouragement that "there will always be more to learn."

Great for a shark lover
The buyer we purchased from sent us a signed copy! My son loves sharks and this was a book about a remarkable lady and her remarkable findings on sharks. It helps show that we know what we know through research. Really great for young school age kids. The pictures are great too

Informative and positive!
We went to the Chatham Shark Museum this summer and they had this book there. My children fell in love with it so I decided to buy one copy for me and one for my mom. A wonderful true story in a narrative form. Makes sharks seem more appealing and less scary. Promotes that girls can do anything and not just be a secretary. Promotes inquiry and following your dream. I plan on sharing it with my third grade class this year.

This is a great book for a toddler
This is a great book for a toddler. It has lots of words but the pictures are very interesting. We take our kids to the aquarium a lot so they are very interested in all things aquatic. If they can't pay attention to the story I usually paraphrase the story/ask questions about the book and out child loves it. It's one of our favorites.

One of the things that I really enjoyed about this picture book biography was that the author shared with us her connection with the person she wrote about. It was obvious that she felt honored to have met Eugenie Clark and her family. She even uses Eugenie's nickname (Genie) which gives this story a very personal appeal. I enjoy picture book biographies that give you a broad overview of a person's life. It makes for a nice starting point for a child who finds the topic interesting. Illustrator Jordi Solano used deep dark colors for most of the illustrations. These take you deep into the ocean and into the dark halls of the shark tanks of the aquarium. They are beautifully created. Notebook pages, dropped in throughout the story highlight lessons that Eugenie learned and wanted to share with the world. This would make a great read-aloud for library visits with 2nd - 5th grade students.

We loved talking with Heather Lang and learning about her swimming with sharks experience. She told us about overcoming her fear of sharks and learning to respect sharks. We highly recommend this book for book clubs at schools.

I loved Eugenie Clark as a kid so I was very excited to find a picture book biography of her! Although I've read a few critiques saying that more anecdotes from Clark's life should have been included, I feel the opposite. I think this book captures her spirit and her career in an easily accessible and still exciting way. I have read it to two groups of kids ranging in age between 5 and 8 and in both cases they were spellbound! Highly recommended.
