Mine doesn't look like the picture. I was wondering what the 2 silver metal "posts" at the bottom used for?

Don’t laugh, but I put my USB keyboard in there when I am sitting down at my desk and use it to type. This allows my neck to have a break from looking down at the laptop screen instead of taking it off of the stand. I have the one with the silver pieces you are referring to and I believe it supports the stand when at the lowest setting. I will try to take a photo or video and edit later after work.

How high is the lip on the edge? How far does the lip extend above the work surface?

The lip is better for bulkier laptops, but if you have a slimmer laptop you can place a shelf liner or similar pad on the platform to raise it up a bit (also ensures it won’t slip off as easily) so it’s not a problem.
