Does this device do single-pass duplex scanning, or does the paper need to pass back again to pass the second side (and risk a paper jam)?

Single pass via the sheet feeder for multiple documents or single pass for single documents via the front feeder. I am very impressed with this scanner

Has anyone used this for scanning photos, does the size reduction work well on these?

I know this isn't going to be the answer you are looking for but; The Scansnap is really designed for documents, not photographs. If I were scanning photographs, I would use a flatbed. Also, there is considerably less risk of damaging the photographs on a flatbed. Scansnap's sheet feeder is very good however, it does sometimes crease the document.

Will it work with ipad

Technically yes as the documents are sent to the a cloud directory via WiFi, however you may need a laptop to connect the scanner to initially to set up the WiFi connection. It is an excellent scanner where it doesn’t have to be connected to the computer so any one can use plus it is damn fast

Can the stored scans be access from more then one device?

Like any stored file, if you store them on a shared drive - NAS or cloud, then yes they can be accessed from any logged-in device.
