Worth the price
Being a beginner/intermediate uke player, my uke collection grows every year as I explore different tunings, sizes, and brands. Unless you hit the uke jackpot, most new ukes require setup to adjust the action of the strings to suit the player, otherwise the uke can be frustrating to play, especially at the lower frets. My preference is to set the string height, in freedom units, between 5/64 to 6/64” at the 12th fret and between 2.5/64” to 3.5/64” at the first fret, making the uke comfortable to play without risk of buzzing. There are many good videos on YouTube that provide guidance on how to lower the action of the strings so don’t be afraid to tackle this job. In the event of an epic failure … replacement nuts are cheap and you've chocked up yet another learning experience in life. Anyways, if you find the action at the 1st fret still too high after sanding the saddle to dial in the height at the 12th fret, the next step is to carefully file the slots in the nut at a slight angle down towards the headstock, taking frequent measurements with a string height gauge. For this task I recommend MusicNomad’s diamond coated files. Sure, there are cheaper options available but nothing is more frustrating than buying cheap low-quality tools that make the task at hand more arduous than necessary. I bought three MusicNomad files (0.024”, 0.028”, and 0.036”) and these were sufficient to file the nut slots on my concert and tenor ukes. The diamond coating makes it really easy to cut through bone fret nuts. If necessary, the file can easily be removed from the yellow plastic handle by flicking off the handle’s end cap and sliding the file out of the handle. And yes, the file’s size is laser-etched on the file so you always know what size it is. In the end, it takes me about a 1/2 hour to file the four slots in a bone uke nut, with most of that time spent measuring string height, tuning the uke, playing tunes to test the action, and of course, enjoying a good beer. Kudos to MusicNomad for their quality products!

Gets the job done with ease
I got Kala Tenor for $200.00 and I changed the strings from High G to Low G, but the Low G strings wouldn’t fit in the nut because the groove was barely there. I thought Kala had a better attention to detail. Anyway, I got this little tool and it worked fast and with ease. This file is very strong, so went you use it, don’t apply pressure and check your work frequently to make sure that you don’t go to deep. A big thank to Music Nomad in their quality of this product!!!

Cut's VERY fast so be really careful.
These are very well made and super easy to use but be really careful or you'll over do it. I only had one string that really needed to be lower at the nut on my new Yamaha FG800J. The B string had about .026" clearance at the first fret. The spec I was using was .016" so I was aiming for .018" just to leave a little margin for error. The first 3 light strokes took off about .005". An additional 2-3 more very light strokes took the clearance down to .016". Those last strokes were with less pressure and I expected to need a little more off but I didn't. So I'm happy with the results. Even if I had overdone it, the fault would have been mine and not the file. I barely saw any material coming out of the slot but it's a little space that the material was being removed from. I'm a beginner guitar player with only about 5 weeks of experience and lowering this one stray string made it a little easer to fret the B string in the first fret as required for the infamous F chord.

Great but expensive
These are without a doubt the best nut files. They're just so damn expensive and I can't decide if they're worth the money. If you're cutting a fresh nut, they probably are. If you just need to make a little adjustment because your cowboy chords are going out of tune, you're probably better off with a set of filing wires. I'll probably slowly build up a collection of these over time as I get more into doing my own maintenance and set ups, but these are definitely not necessary for simple small adjustments. If anything you'll take away too much material on accident.

It helps to have the right tools. This is a good example!
MusicNomad is a respected name in tools used for guitar making and repair. When you need to cut string slots in a new nut, or maybe make minor tweaks to an existing one, you don't need to try to make do with a general-use kind of file. These, as you see in the picture, come with their own holder. That's a big plus, and the price makes these nut files an excellent value.
