The crew and residents of Federation space station Deep Space Nine let the wonders-and dangers-of the galaxy come to them in this hit syndicated series, the third entry in the "Star Trek" universe, that ran from 1993-1999. Avery Brooks stars as DS9 commander Benjamin Sisko, along with Rene Auberjonois, Alexander Siddig, Terry Farrell, Colm Meaney, Armin Shimerman, and Nana Visitor.175 episodes on 47 discs. 135 1/2 hrs. Review: I Forgot How Amazing this Series Is! - I watched this series back in the 90s when it originally aired, then later watched some episodes on Netflix. Now purchasing the entire series in one set, wow. I'm amazed at the dialog and depth of the content in easlch episode. Back in the 90s, i didn't appreciate this series as much as I did TNG and Voyager, but now that I am older, I find this series holds its own as far as the deep philosophical lessons as well as the political and diplomatic encounters with other species. As for the quality, it's not great, but it's also a product of the 90s and the technology available at the time. Sure, they intended this for old tube tvs as this is all that was available at the time, so one cannot expect high definition. Our TVs today highlight every flaw in the picture, but this is just a difference in technological advancement. Those that have complained about picture quality are spoiled by today's technology and do not represent the lifelong fan base this series has garnered over the years. Others have pointed out the flaws of the DVD production and packaging. I can attest that it leaves something to be desired and did experience some unplayable discs to to heavy scuffing. But since I own these DVDs, I took a chance on polishing the affected discs with a fine abrasive compound to remove the scuffs. This worked well for me and was able to open all discs. It is recommended that you check all discs ahead of time, either in a computer or dvd player. In a computer you will find all errors without error correction by dvd players. This will help you identify problematic discs. It seems inevitable that some discs, especially in the first three seasons, will be scuffed. I suggest you employ a similar method by removing scratches and scuffs with a fine abrasive compound applied to the surface of the disc to remove those scuffs. Look up rhe procedure online for proper techniques to use. Exchanging the set will most likely not solve your problem as it seems to happen in shipping with discs vibrating and moving around due to handling. The discs are not real snug in the cases, so this is an inherent flaw in packaging. Luckily, only 4 out of the 47 discs were affected for me. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with this set and will be cherished forever! Review: love DS9! - First, the physical DVD set. The packaging makes me nervous with two disks on each peg and everything crammed so tight. I’ll need to get a separate case to keep the disks protected from damage. Second, what’s on the DVDs. Its bonus features are fantastic, giving a great look inside the creative process, and I love the crew dossiers. Third, the show itself. Once the creatives found their footing, they took the show in a bold new direction. Serialized storytelling is the only thing that makes sense if it’s set on a space station: they don’t get to warp off to the next sector and leave others to clean up the messes they made. That leads to much richer, more complex plots, characters, and relationships. It takes such a raw, honest, varied, and compassionate look at what it is to live with trauma, and a nuanced and sophisticated look at the positives and negatives of religion and politics. It ended up being great for the show that Michelle Forbes didn’t want to play Ro as a permanent leading cast member because it got us Kira as second-in-command rather than just Starfleet members paternalistically being placed in charge of a people just beginning to find their feet after a long and brutal occupation. All of the characters are so fascinating, and all have personal and interpersonal arcs that are brilliantly written and acted. The affectionate hostility between Odo and Quark is endlessly entertaining, as is the Miles and Julian buddy comedy. Nog’s story arc is my favorite in the franchise. Both Daxes are awesome, and Kira is one of my favorite characters in the franchise. It’s refreshing to see a Starfleet captain who’s capable of healthy relationships: nowhere in the galaxy can you find a better dad or friend than Sisko, and I’d sure love to be invited to one of his dinner parties. Garak is by far the best written and acted character in the franchise. Sometimes he simply lies outright, other times he waves the truth right in front of you while calling it something else. Layers upon layers of deception, truth, and lies. The peerless Jeffrey combs plays Brunt and multiple Weyouns, all of which are subtly different (the defector is VERY different). DS9 has two of Treks three best individual villains (the third being Alice Krige’s Borg queen). Winn, who’s willing to inspire religious terrorism and civil war to gain and maintain power, and Dukat, who’s even more terrifying as a cult leader than he was as a genocidal megalomaniac fascist military dictator who handed his own people over to the Dominion. It isn’t enough for Dukat to control what people do and say, he also needs to control what they think and feel. DS9 adds so many rich layers to the story of the Bajorans, Cardassians, Klingons (especially with wise General Martok), and Ferengi, and brings in great new aliens from the Gamma quadrant. The Dominion arc is the embodiment of sophisticated storytelling at its finest, looking broadly at the politics and social impacts and narrowly at the personal costs of war. Its final episode is the most satisfying in the franchise. I only wish we got to hear Morn speak, and that it showed if Jake and Nog maintained their friendship.

Star Trek before it was broken.
What can you say? Its Star Trek before it went off the rails (in the past few y ears). I grew up watching the original reruns of the original... DS9 has great characters, acting, and stories. For my money it really picks up after Worf joins the cast. For those that say its Star Trek in a mall, well, yeah... but this is what a real space station would be like in that century. Think of an airport today. People coming and going, food for sale, trinkets for sale, etc. Anything Star Trek from Enterprise back is really good.

Good Show - Dumb Packaging
Am assuming nobody is buying this without already knowing the show. Good show! Dumb packaging - slightly better than the ST-TNG, in that my bad eyes can at least read the disks of DS9. Transferred all disks out of the product packaging into the same disk holder as the TNG disks went into. The design requires you to remove multiple disks to get the single disk you want to watch out, and then back in. If you actually plan on watching these, you’re going to want a different storage method also. Disk play seems a bit clunky - multiple episodes per disk is nice; but so far not seeing any way to play all episodes. Have to select and play individually. Episode selection is not exactly intuitive. Had a hard time telling which episode was being highlighted to play on the first disk I put in. Not sure if they’ll all be that way, but honestly missing a Play All feature like ST TNG had. Willing to bet this is the only option out there for the whole series, so you’re probably going to buy it anyway. I would. Just know that you also want to buy a separate disk holder - I bought one to hold 120 disks, so I could put TNG, DS9, and Enterprise together. Still beats paying monthly for streaming service to give me questionable ability to watch these shows… UPDATE: have watched maybe half the disks so far. Picture and sound quality have been good on all of them. Similar to The Next Generation, the show holds up from when it was new; there are of course episodes I like better than some others; but always enjoy the chemistry among the actors. Have a new appreciation for some storylines, and definitely enjoying the rewatch!

Recommended from Aus
From Australia here — this is a Region 1 DVD set, so you’ll need a multi-region DVD player to use it locally. I grabbed a cheap one from Amazon and it works a treat through HDMI. The show plays in its original 4:3 aspect ratio, not 16:9, which for me is part of the charm. It feels properly 90s, just like TNG on Blu-ray. I really wish Paramount would convert DS9 and Voyager the way they did TNG, but in saying that, this set is fantastic. One thing to note: the multi-case box is pretty rubbish for disc storage. It did its job getting the set to me safely, and everything arrived in perfect condition, but I’d still recommend buying a separate DVD case holder — again, cheap on Amazon. Definitely recommended!

For me, Star Trek: TNG edges it out---by half a hair
I am a big fan of Start Trek: The Next Generation. If I were to rank Star Trek: TNG as #1--- Then Star Trek: Deep Space Nine is #1-A. Very few misses episode-wise in this series and when it hits---it's right on the money. Excellent stand alone episodes and the serialized formula is as good as it gets. Strong characters in the main cast and some of the greatest supporting cast of characters put on screen. Some fantastic space battles and the story plots hook and won't let go. Must have for any Star Trek fan!
