With the publication of the Parerga and Paralipomena in 1851, there finally came some measure of the fame that Schopenhauer thought was his due. Described by Schopenhauer himself as 'incomparably more popular than everything up till now', the Parerga is a miscellany of essays addressing themes that complement his work The World as Will and Representation, along with more divergent, speculative pieces. It includes his 'Aphorisms on the Wisdom of Life', reflections on fate and clairvoyance, trenchant views on the philosophers and universities of his day, and an enlightening survey of the history of philosophy. The present volume offers a new translation, a substantial introduction explaining the context of the essays, and extensive editorial notes on the different published versions of the work. This readable and scholarly edition will be an essential reference for those studying Schopenhauer, the history of philosophy, and nineteenth-century German philosophy.

A fantastic accompaniment to his main book "The world and will ...
A fantastic accompaniment to his main book "The world and will as Idea", although his essay on university philosophy drags on and is filled with bitterness, there is a great deal of insight that can be gained by anyone reading this book. If only he received ample recognition during his life, then perhaps he would not have wasted so many words on the German Idealist school!

Cambridge hardback is print on demand
This is a review about the pyhsical hardback quality only. It is a print on demand production, white (i.e. not off white or cream. Looks cold and unpleasant to read from at length) with poor binding. Sometimes this can be forgiven, but not for a £90 and for such an important book/series. I believe earlier books published in the series (Cambridge Schopenhauer) were produced to a better standard (or maybe even earlier copies of this book), but somehow it wasn't profitable to print books of good quality at this this price. It should be noted the paperback is also print on demand, infact it seems to be the exact same paper/printing used in the hardback (same binding in effect also, glued perfect bound) but without boards glued to it and is a realistic price. The text printing in both, it should be said, is of a better standard than other print on demand books I've seen but still not as good as traditional books. In my opinion print on demand books should be clearly marked as such, as they're almost always an inferior in production quality.
