Can i use this Sata III HDD in a Sata II Motherboard?

SATA III (revision 3.x) interface, formally known as SATA 6Gb/s, is a third generation SATA interface running at 6.0Gb/s. The bandwidth throughput, which is supported by the interface, is up to 600MB/s. This interface is backwards compatible with SATA 3 Gb/s interface, also known as SATA II.  In other words, your motherboard will address the drive, but you won't benefit from the increased speed capability of this strong WD hard drive.  One solution is to buy a Rosewill RC-227 PCI-Express 2.0 SATA III (6.0Gb/s) Controller Card.  Of course, your motherboard must have a PCI-e x1 slot available.  A $19 solution..

Locate the Dell ID number on your PC and call Dell support. They will be able to examine your PC over the Internet and recommend a drive for you. E.g., does your PC have an IDE interface or is it even SATA capable? Then they will tell you about Henry's concerns in the previous answer. Partitioning is not the easiest system for novices.In addition, Dell can run a utility for you (or show you how) to identify all BIOS upgrades available for you - video, etc. that way, you spend you money one time, and get precisely the drive you need.  That said, buy a new PC.  When the drive's inserted, you'll still have a moderately functional 8-yr old computer.

No, It is compatible with Windows 7. It is only a hard drive, it should work with any OS.

I have one caviar blue made in 2012 that has 6 year run time and never had one problem. Does everyone have similar success with theirs?

The answer, yes. I have run spinner type hard drives for over ten years, until they become so outdated that I replace them will higher capacity hard drives. When I get the jitters about hard drive longevity, I simply but another one as a back up. At the moment, I only run hard mounted hard drives for system requirements and backups. I use external hard drives for all common storage. Have a problem with the computer, the external hard drive with all your data, can simply be plugged into another computer. Have a good week.
