To answer your question it is important to understand that there is a difference between 'melt and pour' soap making and 'cold process' soap making. In the 'cold process' of making soap, different fats and oils like shea butter are combined with lye (which technically refers to sodium hydroxide) to produce solidified soap in a chemical process. This is called the 'saponification' process. Lye is a caustic substance and can damage your skin if you are exposed to it. Out melt and pour soap making kit is an easier, quicker and safer way to make beautiful and professional bars of soap. The soap base has already gone through the 'saponification' process, and is now composed of fatty acids, shea butter and other natural ingredients that soften, clean and moisturise the skin.
