Personally I am very allergic to noise. My used aquarium came with a very noise pump. Had to replace it, and choose this one. Initially, it still made a bit of noise. I guess because there was still some air inside it, or vibrating a bit against the walls of my sump. It's nice and very silent now. Quality build too. Very happy with it.

While the pump is not 'dead silent' in my application (as some reviewers say), it awfully quiet, and is a great little pump. I have mine in a 40g Sterilite tub I use as a sump on a 60g acrylic freshwater tank. The pump's hose runs out the tub and returns to the tank via a 45-degree PVC elbow that slips tightly into one of the 3/4" holes drilled into the top of the tank. I mention that because the PVC might be conducting some sound that would be absent if it were a soft hose at the return vs a PVC fitting. But if I turn all other equipment off, and just have the Sicce running, and press my ear against the tank (to hear what the fish hear), I get a low hum. However it's so quiet the bubbling of the return at the surface is equally loud and so it's not an annoying hum like previous pumps I've owned. (Just standing at the sump I can also hear a very low hum, but it's extremely quiet, especially for such a powerful little pump.) Pros: the pump is very small, does not generate heat, and has an efficient motor. In my case the head is about 4' but the distance to the return (horizontally) is another 5'. I have a 1.5" bulkhead (drilled tank), draining down 1.5" PVC into the tub and the pump keeps up perfectly with the overflow. A stronger pump would have needed to be dialed back. I couldn't have picked a better one for this application. Surface sits about 5/8ths inch from top of tank. I've used Dolphin pumps in the past which lasted some 17 years in constant operation, but when the last one died, I found this Sicce as I wanted a quieter pump. It has them beat for sure. I'd buy it again in a second. In fact I'd never buy any other kind of pump. It's been in operation now about a year and I can't remember now, but I think it's also self-cleaning. IAC I have never opened it, and it's working as effortless and perfectly as the day I got it. The Dolphin had a foam prefilter that needed cleaning every 6mo or so, even though it was in a very clean sump. If you need a great pump, this is the one. I've been keeping fish for 27 years and Sicce will be my go-to pump from now on, assuming it stands the test of time.
