I'd love to tell you I bought this to go fishing any time, any where, but I actually got it as a cat toy. My kitten is a terror. Straight up hyper active terror. I wanted something I could use to cast a toy far away but also lazily bring it back so I didn't have to leave my couch to get it. Sheer laziness in entertaining a cat prompted this purchase. Are the lures good? I have no idea. I pawned them off on my Dad who said he could use them (as of writing this review he hasn't so I can't weigh in on the subject). Is the line it comes with good? I think so. It holds up to a 5lb kitten attacking a toy at the end so you know, logically that also means it'll hold up to a 5lb fish? Honestly I don't know. But hey, it holds up to a terror of a kitten so there's that. It's super easy to use. Granted, casting rattling fake mice is a world apart from a lure (lighter weight makes it harder to cast) but overall super easy. You can learn even if you've never used an actual fishing pole for actual fishing (I've used standard poles for fishing, just cast the same.My friend who has never fished a day in her life picked up casting after 0 instructions from me in about 3 tries). The folding mechanism is neat, it allows the pole to stay very compact. Would this be the best fishing pole you've ever purchased? No, but do you expect it to be? No. It's a $15 folding fishing pole. It's compact and gets the job done with a bit of humor-whether you're cat fishing or kitten fishing. Really though-it's been a godsend for keeping that kitten entertained. He'll chase it after I cast and it'd fun to watch him chase it as I reel it back in. Sometimes I reel it in rather slowly so he can pounce it.

I had one of these when I was a teen many years ago & it was great then. The newer model has the same overall style, but the build quality seems to be not quite as good. My old one had a bit more heft & durability. The new one feels too light & cheap. I believe it also had a 5lb test line whereas this one has a 2lb test. The "tackle box" built into the handle is very small & pretty much useless. It can hold one or two small lures & that's it. That said, this is a good product to throw under the car seat or trunk for those little impromptu fishing holes you happen to chance upon when driving around. The belt clip is good if you don't have "love handles" & even after folding, there is no place to stow the hook/lure unless you remove it from the line. First timers may have trouble casting, but they include a practice "casting" weight with the tool. Overall, it's not bad for what it is, but you can get a mini 14" spinner reel & line kit from Costco at half the price.

This is the greatest little fishing gadget! I've got all kinds of rods and reels in the truck including fly fishing gear. What a fun item. I do a lot of fishing on the fly (at lunch during work - any day you can get in 10 casts is a good day). I have all kinds of collapsible rods, full size rods, and large bait casting and fly rods. This is so easy. I used the stock lures that came with the rod and store in the handle and jammed another of my favorite in there with some swivels. Didn't even change the line - just opened the box and used it. You should have seen the look on the other competitors in the Adult Fishing Derby when I competed using this rod. Even funnier when I landed the first trout. You won't be profiled on ESPN using this rod but the fun quotient is extremely high. Well made, convenient to carry, seems to be repairable (pops open) if needed. I always say that the best fishing rod (or gun) sitting in a case at home is worth nothing compared to something like this in the car being used at the spur of the moment. I've fished about 10 times with it (including from a canoe) and made about 100 casts and it performs flawlessly. Used appropriately, and with proper expectations (you won't land a tuna with this), this rod & reel combo will provide hours of enjoyment. If I break it or it gets damaged, I'll buy another one.

Great usable product, full of nostalgia!

I've used these before and wanted a spare for my friend to borrow on our fishing trip in the Boundary Waters of Minnesota. I love the compact design that folds for easy storage in a pack, the low weight and full functionality. I've caught fish from the shore with this on several occasions with no problems. Its easy to cast (but will not cast as far a full length rod as you can't get as much whip action) and the range of the cast is plenty for shore fishing--especially off rocks where it gets deep fast. It holds up quite well to the fish's jerks and pulls, and even under full bend it did not break, nor did not even seem to be at risk of breaking. The largest fish I have caught was about 2-3 pounds (9 inches) and the rod pulled it in with no problem whatsoever. I have not used it from the canoe as I figure a 5-6 pound walleye would probably be too much, although not for the rod, but for the line itself. If you're looking for a small, lightweight easy to use fishing pole for a little shore fishing for the pan-fries, you will not be disappointed. I you are looking for a professional collapsible rod for bigger fish, you ought to keep looking.

At $15 this is a great start to fishing. It comes with a few lures and hooks. However this is not a good long term solution. Provided that I do like the pocket fisherman, its advantages are also its weaknesses. Its compact design is tucked away inside making it more tedious to maintain the internal mechanics. If you used it in salt water definitely rinse it out. What ended up happening with one of my two is that the reeling mechanism started to fail after about 2 weeks of usage (twice a week). If one is looking to experiment with fishing, I definitely recommend the pocket fisherman but, if you are looking for a compact lightweight pole I recommend the product link below instead combined with the purchase of any cheap reel, In the end I do pass on this token of wisdom, "The fish don't know what kind of gear you've got" Goture Portable Carbon Fiber Telescopic Fishing Rod Retractable Travel Spinning Fishing Pole ,Saltwater Boat Sea Rod
